Abstract

1334761 Submerging tanks ENTREPRISE DE RECHERCHES ET D'ACTIVITES PETROLIERES (ELF) 22 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34374/71 Heading E1H [Also in Divisions B7 and B8] An underwater storage tank 16 is controllably submerged using two or more pairs of compartmented buoyant bodies 19, 22 attached by cables 23, 24 to the tank, the central compartments 1 of the bodies of each pair being alternatively flooded and then emptied of water to cause stepwise sinking of the tank. During flooding of the central compartment of one body of a pair the tank sinks but is supported primarily by the buoyancy of the other body. The central compartment of the one body is then emptied, a brake 7 therein, Fig. 1, being released to allow its cable to be withdrawn from a cable compartment 4 as the body ascends. Thereafter the central compartment 1 of the other body is flooded and emptied in the same sequence. Cables 20, 21 extending from surface floating buoyancy chambers maintain the tank in its correct lateral position during submerging. Each body, Fig. 1, has upper and lower compartments 3, 2 in opposite sides of its central compartment 1, the compartments 1, 2 being filled and emptied through remotely controlled valves 12, 13. During emptying valves 10, 11 are opened to admit compressed air from a line 9 to the compartments 1, 2. Each compartment 2 is kept filled with water during the submerging operation thereby causing the bodies to assume a vertical position in the water.
