Abstract

1326970 Electromagnetic devices INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINESS CORP 21 May 1971 [30 June 1970] 16208/71 Heading H1P An actuator e.g. for print hammer or punch operation comprises a C-shaped magnetic path through arm 12 and arm 14 extending through bucking coil 15 to terminate in face 23 held in place by cover plate 22, or is e.g. cast in a unit from magnetic material with bolt mounting of arm 14 to permit adjustment of the interface of pole 23 and armature 16. A permanent magnet 10 and magnetic column 13 are bonded together and to plate 22 so as to excite flux through armature path #1 and gap path #2. Initially the magnet is positively saturated (P in Fig. 4) and pulse energisation of coil 15, reduces the flux in #1 to zero by shifting the magnet operating point to T when a flux equal to that in #1 is additionally driven through gap 11 together with the flux in #2. On de-energization of coil 15 the induction of the permanent magnet returns to point P. The magnetic column 13 includes post 17 and the magnetic armature 16 movable relatively to face 23 and the post, and a gap 11 is inserted (over) between arm 12 and column 13. Lever arm 21 actuates the print hammer by face 18.
