Abstract

1306691 Pile fabrics MONSANTO TEXTILES Ltd 22 April 1971 [5 May 1970] 21643/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A process for the application of a backing material to a pile fabric wherein the pile comprises a synthetic thermoplastic polymer, comprises bringing about the adhesion of the backing material to the back of the pile fabric with a heat plastifiable adhesive by heating the backing material to a temperature at which the adhesive becomes plastified, this temperature being above the heat distortion temperature of the polymer and simultaneously or subsequently compressing the backed pile fabric while throughout maintaining the temperature of the pile fibres below the heat distortion temperature of the polymer. The heating may be accomplished by banks of radiant heaters, blasts of hot air or steam or by contact of the backing material with a heated surface, e.g. a roller, and the pile may be kept cool by blasts of cold air or water or by contact with a cold surface. The synthetic thermoplastic polymer of the pile may be a polyamide, a polyacrylonitrile, a polyester, a polyolefin, cellulose acetate or triacetate or acrylic or methacrylic fibres. The backing material may be a woven or non-woven fabric, a non-pile fabric or a foamed sheet. Preferably the backing material is coated with the heatplastifiable adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, and is passed in contact with a pile fabric between the nip of a pair of rollers, the roller in contact with the backing being heated to the plastifying temperature of the adhesive and the roller in contact with the pile fabric being cooled to below the heated distortion temperature of the polymer. In the example a backing of jute 1 coated on one surface with polyvinyl alcohol adhesive, the coated surface being protected by a silicone release paper 2 and a carpet material formed of a pile of an acrylic fibre on a woven polypropylene backing are fed at the same rate to a nip of a pair of rollers 4, 5. The release paper 2 is stripped off and the adhesive-coated face of the backing is contacted with the carpet material in the nip, the roller 4 which is in contact with the backing being heated to 80‹ C. while the roller 5 in contact with the pile being heated to 40‹ C. The backed carpet was wound on a roll 9.
