Abstract

1,106,473. Laminated tufted carpets. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Sept., 1965 [18 Sept., 1964], No. 38214/64. Addition to 964,539. Heading B5N. [Also in Division A4] A method of locking the tufts of a tufted carpet into a supporting web comprises applying discrete particles of organic thermoplastic material to the back surface of a tufted carpet web, heating the particles to a heat-softened state and pressing a film of organic thermoplastie material against said"surface to bond it thereto whilst the particles are in a heat softened state. In a modification of the method, discrete particles of organic thermoplastic material are applied to a surface of a backing material, the particles heated to a heat-softened state and the treated surface applied to the opposed surface of the film during or after the application of the tufted carpet web. In Fig. 1, a length of tufted carpet is fed past an applicator 4, under radiant heaters 5, between carding roll 6 and laminating roll 7 where it is laminated to' film 8, the resultant laminate being fed past applicator 4<SP>1</SP>, radiant heaters 5<SP>1</SP> and between carding roll 6<SP>1</SP> and laminating roll 7<SP>1</SP> where the surface of the film is laminated to the backing material 10. Specified films are polyethylene, copolymers of ethylene with vinyl esters or acrylates, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. The particles are preferably of a polymer the same as or similar to the film. The specified backing is a hessian fabric.
