1299967 Pipe joints D VAN DE KERKE 18 June 1970 [19 June 1969 29 Oct 1969] 29621/70 Heading F2G A pipe coupling connecting butted pipes 1, 2, comprises an outer axially rigid sleeve (4) (Fig. 1, not shown) surrounding the pipe ends and a flexible tube 3 interposed between the pipe ends and the sleeve (4), the tube 3 being axially longer than the sleeve (4) and being turned back over the ends of the sleeve (4), band clips 7, 8 being provided to secure the joint. The inner diameter of the flexible tube 3 is approximately equal to the outside diameter of the pipes, and the outside diameter of the tube 3 approximates to the inside diameter of the sleeve (4). The sleeve (4) may have parallel slots cut in its ends to improve radial flexibility, the slots being preferably parallel to the sleeve axis and being less than half the length of the sleeve in extent. Alternatively the sleeve (4) may be made up of a number of axially extending members (10) (Fig. 2, not shown) laid edge to edge round the joint and flexibly connected, e.g. by transverse wires (9). In this case the sleeve may be formed per se or may be cut from a length of such edge to edge members 10 and wrapped round the joint. In the latter case the pipes may have enlarged ends 11 (Fig. 3) and the longitudinal members 10 may be contained both to comply with said enlargement 11 and to provide recesses for receiving the band clips 7, 8. In all cases the flexible tube 3 may be so formed that the turned back ends have circumferential recesses to accommodate the band clips 7, 8, to prevent axial movement of the latter. The coupling is suitable for piping in a sand dredger.
