1278961 Piecing arrangements, cleaning machines, signalling PARKS-CRAMER CO 24 June 1969 [24 June 1968] 31925/69 Headings DID and DIF An automatic piecing device is mounted on a travelling pneumatic cleaner which services a plurality of spinning machines. The pneumatic cleaner travels on an overhead electric track to suck lint &c from both sides of a ring and traveller spinning frame (Fig. I not shown). The piecing device (11 in Fig. 1) is carried supported between the blowing and suction tubes of the cleaner and its photoelectric yarn sensor (79, in Fig. 4), is activated at the start of its traverse of a row of spindles. Yarn breakage at one of the spindles is sensed by the sensor 79 and the cleaner carriage is braked. A timing device is actuated to control the subsequent sequence of piecing operations. A centreing member (120 in Fig. 4A not shown) accurately aligns the piecing up device with the spindle, (Fig. 4). Yarn grippers (126, 127, 166, 167) (which subsequently act on an auxiliary yarn Y-1) are moved forward to the spindle and the carriage carrying these, grippers &c is lowered onto the ring rail (Fig. 5, not shown). The yarn joining operation is then initiated by an upward and downward movement of auxiliary yarn gripper (127) to distend auxiliary yarn Y-1 between the upper and lower grippers (166, 167), this length of yarn being cut below the lower gripper 166 and the grippers then being advanced onto the spindles (Fig. 16). The upper gripper is released and the cut length of the auxiliary yarn is pneumatically knotted with the roving from the drafting rollers (Fig. 17 not shown). One lower gripper is also released and the traveller is threaded onto the yarn by being blown around the ring with a blast of air (Figs. 19, 20 not shown). A second blast of air blows the auxiliary yarn against the bobbin so that it is wound up. At about the same time the yarn grippers are retracted. The carriage carrying the grippers is then fully retracted and raised off the ring rail. The piecing up device centreing member is released and piecing up device again moves along the row of spindles. Counting and signalling ends down after an attempt has been made to piece the yarn may be performed by a process similar to that described in Specification 1267701. The ends down condition is detected by the first yarn sensor 79 and a second photoelectric yarn sensor 80 carried on the piecing up device.
