A gas fired room heater comprises a simulated solid fuel unit 12 heated by a first burner 70 and a second burner 72 within a combustion chamber heating air flowing over the walls of the combustion chamber. The simulated solid fuel unit comprises ceramic lumps 10 within a box which may have a glass front 47. The flames from the burner 70 project through the interstices in the ceramic lump 10, and the combustion products flow through a duct 38 to the main flue outlet 82. The combustion chamber is of flattened form, extends for a substantially greater height than does the simulated solid fuel unit, and has an outlet 62. A hood 84 encloses the flue outlets 40, 62, and a down draught diverting baffle 96 extends over the outlets. A common pilot light may be provided for both burners. The burner 70, Fig. 3, comprises a body 118 with nozzles 124 and an extension 122 to which is secured the burner 72. The common pilot light 128 is arranged at the end of projection 122, holes 130 enabling the flame to reach the nozzles 124 when the burner 72 is turned on. A pilot flame failure device controls the supply to both burners, through a valve, Fig. 3a, having an inlet passage controlled by a valve 150 operated by thermocouple type pilot flame failure device 156. The gas flow to burner 72 through outlet 139 is controlled by a room temperature thermostat 142 having an adjustment hoop 134, and operating on valve member 152. A manually controlled valve 136 with an operating knob 132 controls the flow of gas through passages 154, 151 in the valve body and outlet 158 to the solid fuel simulator burner 70.
