Abstract

1,263,221. Synthetic composite filaments. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 25 Feb., 1970 [3 March, 1969 (2)], No. 9060/70. Heading B5B. A synthetic composite filament comprises a first filamentary component consisting of a copolymer of styrene with acrylonitrile and/or methyl methacrylate or a mixture of such copolymers, and a second filamentary component consisting of a synthetic crystalline fibreforming polymer, said first and second components extending and being bonded to one another continuously along the length of the composite filament. The copolymer may consist of 10 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile units and 60 to 90% by weight of styrene units. The copolymer may consist of 10 to 90% by weight of methyl methacrylate units and 10 to 90% of styrene units. The copolymer may consist of not more than 10% by weight of acrylonitrile units, at least 10% by weight of styrene units and more than 10% but less than 90% by weight of methyl methacrylate units. The second component may consist of a polyamide, a polyester, or a polyolefin, mixtures of two or all of these polymers, or mixtures consisting mainly of at least one of the above polymers. The polyamide may be nylon 6, nylon 66, nylon 12, nylon 610, nylon 9, nylon 11, a block polyetheramide, or copolymer or mixtures of two or more of the above polyamides. The polyester may have been formed by the esterification of at least one acid polycondensation unit selected from the group consisting of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, phthalic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, trimellitic acid, pyromellitic acid and sodium sulphoisophthalic acid with at least one glycol polycondensation unit selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, cyclohexane dimethanol, and diethylene glycol. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, propylene, or a copolymer or mixture of these polymers. The composite filament of the invention may have an " islands-in-a-sea " appearance in crosssection, the " sea component " corresponding to the first component previously defined and the " island components " corresponding to the second component previously defined and being in the form of a number of microfine parallel filamentary components independently extending along the composite filament and being surrounded and bonded by the " sea component ".
