A container C may be removably mounted on a printing machine, such as an offset duplicating machine or a letterpress printing machine, and ink contained in it be squeezed under the action of pressurizing means such as plunger 11 through an apertured wall 5 into the space between a wall 5, a lip 7 and a roller 13, so that as it revolves anticlockwise the roller 13 is coated with ink. The container C may be of sheet metal, of plastics material or of card, e.g. of plastics material with a metal lip, and may contain ink directly, in contact with its walls, or may have an inner container, optionally replaceable, which holds ink and has apertures which align with the apertures 6 in wall 5. The inner container may be rigid, with an interior plunger, or may be deformable and be of a rubber or plastics material. Ink may be expelled from the container C by inflatable means acting on it, by a plunger or by a roller. The plunger or roller may be a permanent part of the printing machine or may be part of the container or inner container and actuated by the machine. A roller 13 may be adjustable relative to the container C and is the first inking roller of a train which is a permanent part of the printing machine. Alternatively the container may incorporate an inking roller which takes the place of such a first inking roller. The container C may be moulded from a plastics material and be elongated, with four ink outlets 6 in wall 5. Ridges of concave outline at its ends bear on roller 13, spacing wall 5 from it and limiting lengthwise spread of ink on roller 13 and a plunger 11 carries sealing skirts and may be driven by a rack 29 and a pusher plate 30. Adjustment of twelve screws 50, spaced along the roller 13, forces plate 49 against the flexible lip 7 and adjusts the gap between the lip 7 and the roller 13. The rack 29 may be driven by a spring motor, located in the container housing. Where a variety of inks of differing viscosity are to be used in one machine a range of pressures may be applied to the contents of multiple containers C, alternatively presented with the inks, by providing, say, seven springs, with means for selecting which is to act on pusher 30. Ink-filled containers may be supplied with apertures 6 closed by strips of plastics material, ink-permeable paper or metal foil, and the strips, or other strips, may be used to close the apertures 6 if a container is removed from a machine while still part full of ink. Where an ink-filled container is to be acted on by a plunger it may be supplied with its end where the plunger is to be applied, or through which access is to be gained to a plunger, sealed with a removable or frangible strip.
