Abstract

1,213,113. Valves; seals. GEBR. BOHLER & CO. A.G. 28 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968], No. 4612/69. Headings F2B and F2V. A valve for controlling the flow of liquid metal, such as sodium in a nuclear reactor, has its stem 3 sealed by a bellows 8 and a tube 2, means 7 being provided to cool the gap 1 between the tube and the housing 6 and further means 9 to heat the bellows. The bellows, which are of stainless chromium nickel steel, are thus maintained at a temperature of about 300‹ C. so that solidification of the liquid metal and the movement of impurities, such as oxides, towards the bellows is prevented. The interior of the bellows and the tube 2 are filled, with a protective gas, such as argon, while the outer surface of the bellows is heated by an electrical coil in an insulated housing 10. The means 7 consist of radial ribs.
