1,206,716. Ornamenting. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. 7 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 6035/68. Heading B6G. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A liquid colour medium is sprayed on to a sheet material by applying the liquid colour to an apertured surface and directing a gas stream to displace the colour from the apertures and to deposit it on the sheet material. The colour medium may be a dye solution or paste or pig. ment suspension, a dye intermediate, coupling reagent or bleaching agent and may be applied to paper, textiles, metal and wood to produce a variety of mottled, stippled and similar effects which can be easily controlled. The surface may be a stationary surface or a moving surface such as endless belt or a disc which can rotate. The belt may be passed through the nip or nips of one or more pair of pinch rollers subsequent to passing through a container containing the colour medium. Alternatively the container may be dispensed with and the belt surface passed through the nip or nips of one or more pairs of pinch rollers after having colour medium applied thereto or the colour may be applied to one or more of the pinch rollers. Certain of the apertures in the surface may be prevented from allowing the passage of the gas stream or may be prevented from supporting the colour to obtain a pattern. The pattern can also be controlled by varying the amount and the viscosity of the colour applied to the apertured surface, by passing the sheet of material through the spray at varying speeds and by varying the velocity of the gas stream and the speed at which the gas stream moves over the apertured surface. Apparatus for carrying out the method is described (see Division D1).
