Abstract

1,172,865. Felt. FIBRELOCK FABRICS Ltd. 3 May, 1967 [19 Feb., 1966], No. 7382/66. Heading D1R. A method of manufacturing a fabric comprises preparing a substrate by needling retractile fibres into an open weave base fabric e.g. scrim, inserting primary fibres into the substrate and subjecting the composite fabric to treatment to effect shrinking, felting, retracting or compacting of the substrate. The primary fibres are preferably inserted by means of a needling process. The treatment to effect shrinking is preferably a milling operation but may be mechanical, physical or chemical, for example to effect crimping and curling of the fibres, or may be a treatment involving wetting, heating and friction. The retractile fibres may be wool, cotton, flax, hair or man-made fibres such as polyvinyl chloride or cellulosic fibres. The primary fibres are preferably chosen from the following: cashmere, camel hair, alpaca, llama, mohair, wool, cotton, flax, jute or any man-made e.g. polypropylene. The open-weave base fabric is preferably a cotton or nylon scrim.
