Abstract
1,153,338. Bolt fastenings. PRESTO LOCK CO., Inc. 5 Oct., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 44478/66. Heading E2A. A fastening device for a luggage container comprises a plate member A, a bolt actuating lever B, and a bolt member C, the plate member having a recess 10 in the outer face thereof, the recess terminating at one end in an opening 12 extending through the plate member, pivot means intermediate the bolt actuating lever connecting the lever to the plate member, the axis of rotation of the lever extending across said opening, the lever having one arm 26 adapted to lie in said recess 10 when the lever is in fastening position, the opposite end 30 of the arm from the pivot means being exposed for manual engagement to rotate the lever about the pivot means, whereby the lever is manually 'rotatable to unfastening position, means E for resiliently maintaining the lever in its respective fastening and unfastening positions, the bolt member being mounted beneath the plate member for longitudinal movement, the lever having arm means extending through the opening 12 in direct co-operable relation with means provided by the bolt member, whereby manual rotation of the arm 26 out of the recess causes the bolt member to move to unfastening position and rotation of the arm 26 back into the recess causes the bolt member to be moved to fastening position and a locking bolt F supported by the plate member, means provided by the lever adjacent the pivot means for co-operation with the locking bolt to block rotation of the lever, the plate member having admission means for a key whereby the locking bolt is movable by the key from a position to a position to unblock the lever and vice versa. In the construction shown the arm means extending through the opening 12 comprises a pair of parallel, transversely spaced, arms 28 and the means provided by the bolt member comprises a pair of openings within which are positioned the end portions of the arms; a web 46 is provided intermediate the arms to provide a surface for engagement with the resilient means E which, as shown, is a leaf spring secured to the under side of the plate member. The bolt member is positioned in a housing I which consists of a pair of members 66, 68 which enclose the bolt member C except for a transverse opening into which a keeper D can enter for engagement with the bolt member. The two housing members are connected together by tangs on a side wall of the bottom member 66 which are bent over the top housing member 68. The top housing member is provided with an opening 78 to allow the end portions of the lever arms 28 to engage the bolt member. The plate member A is positioned on one side of a section of the luggage container and the housing I is positioned on the other side of the luggage container section, the housing and the plate member A being connected together by studs 86, 86' which are integral with the plate member A and which extend through openings in the housing members, the end portions of the studs being headed over to connect the plate member to the housing. The bolt member has a transversely extending hook 90 and the keeper comprises a base portion 100 from which transversely extends a pair of parallel arms 102, 104; the arms being bent out of the general plane of the base portion so that they can enter the opening in the member 66 for co-operation with the bolt member; the arm 102 is longer than the arm 104 and is provided with an inturned hook 106 which terminates in a nose 108; the hook 106 engages the hook 94 of the bolt member and the bolt member is provided with a ramp 95 which draws the keeper towards the bolt mamber as the bolt member moves towards the fastening position; movement of the bolt member towards the releasing position causes a ramp 98 of the bolt member to engage the arm 104 of the keeper and this ejects the keeper from the housing. The under side of the plate member A is provided with the cavity 112 within which is the locking bolt F, the locking bolt is substantially Y shaped and comprises a central base portion and a pair of transversely spaced arms, the inner side of one arm is provided with a cut out to receive the tang of the key which is inserted through the admission means in a key barrel G on its blocking position the base portion is located under a ledge 48 of the lever B so preventing movement of the lever from the fastening position. The locking bolt is maintained in assembled relationship with the plate member A by a cover plate H which is provided with a pair of spaced dimples which receive a projection on the underside of one of the arms of the locking bolt to hold the locking bolt respectively in its blocking and unblocking positions. The cover plate H also serves to secure trunnions of the lever B in bearing recesses.
