Abstract

1,148,648. Woodworking. W. L. JACKSON, and W. A. HEAD. 6 July, 1967 [11 July, 1966], No. 31119/67. Heading B5L. A method of severing material into predetermined lengths comprises feeding the material along a path, intersecting the path at fixed intervals of time with shearing means, and synchronizing the feeding with the intervals of time. Apparatus for carrying out the method consists of upper and lower rotating members secured to gears 30, 30<SP>1</SP> so as to rotate in unison about shafts 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, one of the gears being driven by a motor. Each member consists of spaced plates 21 between which are holders 34 for blades 35, 35<SP>1</SP> disposed radially of the members. A conveyer C is disposed for feeding logs between the members so that the blades 35, 35<SP>1</SP> cut the logs into predetermined lengths. When a log is fed along the conveyer it actuates a limit switch LS1 to stop the log until a camming switch driven by one of the members is actuated to re-start the conveyer so that the feed of the log is synchronized with the shearing by the blades. The blades are mounted so as to be vertical at the shearing point. In another embodiment, the blades are mounted on pivots between the plates of the members and connected by a linkage to a cam follower movable by a cam whereby during the whole of the cutting action, the blades are maintained in a vertical position.
