Abstract

1,143,762. Drawing glass fibres. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 6 May, 1966 [14 May, 1965], No. 20213/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division D1] This invention relates to a method of packing filamentary material (see Division D1), the filamentary material being in the form of a roving comprising at least one thousand filaments 20 of glass or other filament-forming material flowing from orifices 16 in a feeder 10 at a rate of about four thousand five hundred feet per minute. Nozzles 23 spray water on to the newly formed filaments and an endless belt 28 transfers a lubricant or a coating material from a housing 26 to the filaments. The filaments 20 are attenuated directly from the steams 18 into an untwisted bundle by a gathering shoe 24. A second shoe or guide 25 may be provided for this bundle. The speed of the motor rotating the yarn package is continually reduced, as the package increases in size, to attenuate the filaments to a uniform size.
