Gases, treating with liquids.-In apparatus for cooling, moistening, and purifying gases by passage over and contact with wet surfaces of plates, a number of vertical plates is disposed symmetrically about a vertical axis and the plates are wetted by water distributed from horizontal sprinkler arms rotated above the plates and in such proximity to the upper edges that the arm closes the spaces between the plates which have just been supplied with water long enough to prevent passage of the gas until the water has entered the spaces. The plates may be straight, corrugated, or curved, but are preferably of involute form as shown. They may be arranged radially or tangentially to the central portion of the structure. The arms conform in shape to that of the plates. As described, a number of plates f (only a few shown) are mounted between cylindrical linings h in the upper part of the casing a, and are spaced apart by spacing strips or projections on the plates. Sprinkler arms e are carried on a rotating standard b through which water is supplied, rotation being effected through worm gear k driven bv a motor o. The water falls from the lower edges of the plates on to a conical plate r and runs through strainers s to a reservoir in the bottom of the casing, from which it is drawn by a pump p and supplied to the standard b. The gases are drawn in through apertures in the casing above the level of the reservoir, and pass upwards between the plates, escaping through an adapter t. The arms e are shown as having flanges which serve to close the spaces between the upper edges of the plates near the arm, but this feature forms the subject-matter of a concurrent application.
