Abstract

A textile material is scoured with an organic solvent in a closed vessel using circulation of the solvent by the "beam dyeing" technique, in which the material is carried on a perforated hollow mandrel closed at one end. The solvent may be initially circulated outwards from the mandrel, the direction of flow then being reversed. The solvent is trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, or 1, 1, 2-trichlor-1, 2, 2-trifluorethane; and is employed at a temperature up to its bp. The material treated is cotton, wool, nylon, polyester, or cellulose acetate; and is in woven, knitted, yarn, or carded web form. A vapour duct leads solvent/water vapour from the vessel to a condenser and distillation unit. The scouring treatment is followed by successive treatments with fresh solvent and water or steam. The water may be initially at a temperature of up to 70 DEG C. and then raised during circulation to 90-95 DEG C by passage through a heat exchanger.
