Abstract
1,096,030. Forced breathing apparatus. O. H. DRAGER, [trading as DRAGERWERK HEINR. & BERNH, DRAGER], Sept. 19, 1966 [Sept. 18, 1965], No. 41811/66. Heading A5T. Artificial respiration apparatus comprises chambers 7, 8 in which alternate positive and negative pressures are produced, inhalation and exhalation bags 9, 18 connected by ducts 10, 17 with the patient and each disposed in a chamber, non- return valve 24 between the exhalation bag 18 and the ambient atmosphere and a second valve 19 in the exaltation duct 17 which opens only when negative pressure is produced in the chamber 8 surrounding the exhalation bag 18 so that exhalation air can flow into the exhalation bag. The ducts 10, 17 are connected to the patient by non-return valves 11, 16 respectively and hoses 12, 15. The chambers are connected to a device for producing positive and negative pressures by joints 3, negative pressure being produced in each of the chambers simultaneously so that air is drawn from the ambient atmosphere into the inhalation bag 9 through a non-return valve 14 as exhalation air flows into the exhalation bag 18 through the valve 19. The occurrence of positive pressure in the chambers causes air to flow from the inhalation bag to the patient and from the exhalation bag through the valve 24 to the ambient atmosphere. In an alternative construction arranged for closed circuit operation, the inhalation and exhalation ducts are connected by a valve (27, Fig. 2) which has less resistance to opening on the application of negative pressure than the valve 19, so that initially exhalation air fills the inhalation bag 9, surplus exhalation air passing to the exhalation bag via the valve 19. The circuit includes a carbon dioxide absorber (30) and an anaesthetic gas supply pipe (31) in the inhalation duct upstream of the inhalation valve 11.
