Abstract
1,212,528. Respiratory apparatus. F. M. BIRD and H. L. POHNDORF. 7 Dec., 1967 [14 Dec., 1966], No. 55619/67. Heading A5T. A breathing bag assembly 28 comprises an inner bag 31 inside a flexile outer bag 32, the inner bag having an opening for connection with the patient and the outer bag having an opening sealed about the opening in the inner bag and an additional opening for connection with a gas source. The space between the bags is connected with a gas flow control unit 37 or 51, which may be as described in Specification 1,212,527 providing a cyclically varying gas supply to alternately cause compression and permit expansion of the inner bag, a nebuliser 39 or a venturi assembly 66 being disposed between the unit and the bag assembly. The inner bag 31 is connected to an adaptor for the patient, e.g. a face mask, through a fitting 14 and a circuit 11 which includes one way valve 18, 22, ensuring that expired air passes through a carbon dioxide absorber 24 before further use. The fitting is also connected to a relief valve 48 which opens only if the pressure in the patient circuit exceeds 5 cm. of water. An exhalation valve 41 is connected to the outer bag. Pilot lines 42, 44, 46 and 47 connected to the flow control unit render the nebuliser 39 operative and hold the exhalation valve 41 and the relief valve 48 in closed position when gas 'under pressure is supplied between the bags 31, 32 for compressing the inner bag to induce inspiration. The bag assembly 28 may be connected through a respiratory valve (132) Figure 3 not shown, directly to a face mask (131) for either automatic or manual operation. The respiratory valve (132) comprises an element (138) urged to open position by a spring (141) for permitting exhalation and closed against the spring against a seat (137) when the inner bag is compressed so that air passes into the mask through an opening (142). Oxygen may be supplied to the bag through tubes (146, 147) and a collapsible fitting (148).
