Abstract

1,076,184. Fuel injectors. ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING Ltd. May 1, 1964 [May 1, 1963]. No. 17176/63. Heading FIB. In an electromagnetically operated fuel injection valve having a spring-loaded valve stem 10b within a valve body 1a engaging a valve seat 12b at one end and having an armature 10d at the other end, a swirl chamber 15. having a tangential fuel inlet port 16, surrounds the valve stem upstream of the valve seating. The solenoid coil and iron core assembly 3, 4 are encapsulated in synthetic resin material 6 in a housing 5 and electrical terminals 8 are insulated from the engine B. Valve body 1 consists of portion 1a, e.g. of bronze, and portions 1b, 1c, e.g. of brass, and contains a bronze guide sleeve Id. Valve stem 10 consists of a plastics portion 10a e. g. of Delrin (R. T. M. ) portion 10b e.g. of aluminium, and a Swedish iron armature portion 10c having an enlarged flat head 10d which is engaged by a non-magnetic annular spring 14 which also acts as a spacer between armature portion 10d and the solenoid assembly. Fuel from inlet 19 passes through chamber 20 and tangential passages 16 into swirl chamber 15 and, when the valve is closed, passes through port 17, passage 11 and ports 18, 21a, to the fuel return passage 22. When the valve is opened the swirl in chamber 15 causes the fuel to be passed through orifice 13 as a thin film, having a central air core, and emerges into the engine manifold as a conical sheet which is atomized by its passage through the air. The size of port restrictions 21a are determined by the desired rate of fuel flow and in a modification the ports 17, 21 are omitted. In further modifications a straight or curved extension of the valve stem extends into the outlet orifice 13.
