Abstract

Articles are coated by electrophoretic deposition by passing the articles in succession through liquid coating material by means of a power-driven mechanism and causing D.C. to flow through the material and article being coated only when the article is immersed in the liquid to the desired level required for coating. As shown, a tank 11 containing organic coating material which is anodically deposited is connected to the negative earthed side of a D.C. supply. Articles 15, 17 on hangers insulated from the earthed chain-driven conveyer 23 engage bus-bar 33 via brush contacts 29, 31. The bus-bar has entry and exit segments connected to the supply negative, so that the article enters and leaves the liquid bath at the same (earth) potential as the tank, and insulating members as 36, 38, 42, 44 separating the entry and exit segments and other segments of which segment 41 is shown connected to the supply positive. Limit switch contacts controlled by trips operated by the brush contacts provide for changeover of polarity of the articles when they are fully immersed in the bath, provision also being made for controlling the length of bus-bar which is held positive depending on the rate of travel of the article through the bath. Auxiliary cathodes 77 are provided to assist in coating irregularly shaped articles and the bath is stirred by a propeller 73.
