[Also in Division G3] A web of paper or the like is tensioned by a roller 8 supported directly by pneumatic pistons connected to a large reservoir 12. Vertical movements of the roller are detected by an error signal generator 16 which controls the speed of an electric driving motor 5 to keep the tension constant at a value determined by a pressure control valve 13.
