Abstract

1,049,783. Printing processes. B.X. PLASTICS Ltd. July 16, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 27660/62. Heading B6C. [Also in Division G2] In a xerographic duplicating process the original is copied on to a sheet or web of material at least the surface layer of which bearing the final printed image is formed of a homopolymer of propylene or a vinyl monomer, a polycarbonate, polyformaldehyde, a copolymer of any two or more monomers selected from ethylene, propylene, a vinyl monomer and styrene, or a copolymer of any one or more of the above monomers and any one or more copolymerizable monomers. Examples are given of suitable polyvinyl chloride compositions containing plasticizers which may be used for the production of the sheets or web by a calender or extrusion process. The material may be provided with a backing of cardboard, paper or pressed fibres. The transferred image is fixed by heat using infra-red or radio frequency radiation. If conventional heating is used the material must be protected against deformation. Alternatively the image may be fixed using methyl ethyl ketone vapour, carbon tetrachloride vapour, or petroleum ether. Other solvents suitable for use in vapour fixing are stated to be di-chloroethylene, trichloroethylene, cyclohexanone and ketones. Multi-coloured images may be transferred and fixed on the material surface which preferably has a matt finish. The sheets or web may be coloured and may be printed on both sides. The sheets or web are preferably pretreated before printing with a corona discharge, or oxidizing flame, or with a strong oxidizing liquid or gas. The powder image comprises a thermoplastic carrier such as vinyl acetate, butyl methacrylate, courmormeindene resins or terpene resins for the pigment.
