Abstract

1,045,756. Packaging-machines. FMC CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1963 [Sept. 10, 1962], No. 32254/63. Heading B8C. A packaging machine comprises means for advancing a tube of wrapping material with a longitudinal slot along one side thereof and means for introducing an inert or conditioning gas into the tube through said slot. As shown, a web of gas-impervious, thermoplastic, material is led into a tubeforming die 16, Fig. 1, and cheese loaves to be packaged are fed on to the web in spaced succession by a conveyer 50. On tube formation, the lateral edges 34, Fig. 3, thereof wrap around the inner edges of flanges 22 as these flanges, which form the top wall of the die, gradually extend inwards to form a slot 26, during which time the edges 34 come into contact with rollers 36, slightly inclined to each other in the direction in which the web is moving, which draw them outwards and tighten the web about the cheese loaves 12. The edges 34 are finally turned upwards by guides 42, a longitudinal slot 46 being left between them. The tube then passes under a vertically adjustable gas nozzle 56 and then between two heating shoes 102. The longitudinal slot is sealed after the heating by passing the tube through co-operating pressure rollers 110 and the tube is sealed transversely by sealing rollers 130 which may also sever the tube into individual packages. An inclined plate 126 turns the sealed edges 34 down against the upper surface of the wrapper tube prior to the transverse sealing.
