L'utilisation de la DHA comme agent autobronzant est connue depuis les années 1960. Elle repose sur le principe du développement de réactions connues sous le nom de réactions de Paillard, qui interviennent entre les protéines et acides aminés de la couche kératinisée de la peau (stratum corneum) et les groupements aldéhydes ou cétones des molécules de sucre réductrices.
