Abstract

Complex is described which is insoluble in water and aqs. fluids and which complexes halogen molecules by charge transfer or by van der Waal's forces. The complex is formed by contacting polyvinyl pyrrolidone polyamides, copolymers or polycondensates contg. (active) C with molecular I2. The complex is used to sterilise fluids which contact mucous membranes or other living tissues, render water and gases aseptic, in horticulture as fungicides and in (veterinary) medicine. They are also used in the hygiene/dermatology sectors (e.g. in soaps, pomades, toothpastes, chewing gum), all these uses involving suitable I2 concentrations. The complexes only lose a max. of 1-3% of the I2 introduced and do not alter the taste, smell or quality of any water treated although the I2 is present in the active, molecular, form.
