Abstract

A composite abrasive grindstone comprises a cylinder having segments 4, Figs. 5 and 9, providing the operative surface, each segment, when viewed radially of the grindstone, having a waisted central zone separating two widened end zones whereby adjacent segments interlock with one another and assist each other to withstand tangential forces, the segments being maintained in position by compressing means 14, 15, 16 which act in an axial direction of the grindstone and are secured radially to central framing 17, 18, 19 in the grindstone. The side walls of the segments may consist of straight lines or be curved and the end walls be straight, sinusoidal or have complementary recesses and projections. Each segment may be formed with a pair of passages for receiving the compressing means which consist of rods 14 having nuts 15, 16 at their ends. The rods 14 are braced radially by members 17, 18 anchored to ring portions 19 of the central framing which may be prestressed. The members and portions may be embedded in a concrete mass 21. In another embodiment, the rods 14, Fig. 11, are braced radially by stirrup-shaped members 23 which pass through holes in a cylinder 22 mounted on flanges 26 secured to a shaft 27, nuts 24 acting to pull the members 23 radially inwards. The cylinder 22 may act to support the segments 4. The side walls of the segments may extend around the periphery of the grindstone, as shown in Fig. 5, or at 90 degrees thereto.
