Description

The present invention relates to an electrical connector, in particular for establishing an electrical connection of a functional board in a connection rack. The invention also relates to an electrical connection element and a connecting member, and a corresponding assembly method.

In the military field, vehicles and combat aircraft are generally equipped with many electrical and electronic systems. These systems may be subject to significant vibration and shaking stresses when vehicles are operating on a battlefield.

In order to protect the electronic equipment and to ensure its operation even in difficult conditions, these are housed on functional cards inserted in connection racks.

To provide the electrical connections of the functional board, it is necessary to allow a slight relative movement between the board and a connection terminal while ensuring a reliable electrical connection. This is why these electrical connections are made using a bundle of electrical wires or a flexible circuit whose one end is soldered to the board and whose other end is connected to a connector of the male or female type intended for cooperate with a conjugate connector carried by the rack. The length of the harness or flexible circuit is provided to allow this relative movement between the card and an electrical connection terminal.

However, this welding operation is tedious and time consuming, because not only is it necessary to weld all the electric son or electrical tracks one by one, but it is also necessary to control one by one the quality of the welding points.

En effet, un faisceau filaire ou câble souple a une côte liée au processus de fabrication de longueur minimale importante, à savoir supérieure à 30 mm.In addition, the dimensions in this type of application do not allow the use of cabling. Indeed, a wire bundle or flexible cable has a rib bonded to the manufacturing process of significant minimum length, namely greater than 30 mm.

In addition, when the functional board is inserted in the rack, access to the connector can be difficult or impossible.

To overcome this drawback, it has also been proposed to provide connector with male contacts mounted movable along their longitudinal axis and urged by springs towards contact pads of the connection terminal.

Indeed, the male contacts rub on the contact pads allowing a relative movement between the card and the connection terminal.

However, in terms of connection security, this solution is not optimal, because in hostile environments to which military vehicles may be subjected, significant accelerations can lead to a loss of the electrical connection. In addition, this solution is not robust in the presence of dust or deposits, for example oil, which can also reduce the quality of the electrical connection of the functional board and components housed therein.

On the Figures 1 and 2 is represented in perspective and in plan view an electrical connector 1 for example for connecting a functional board (not shown), for example a printed circuit board (PCB) carrying for example functional units such as radar components, to a terminal connecting a conjugate connector for example a rack (not shown).

This electrical connector 1 comprises a first base 3 and a second base 5, for example made of plastic material such as polyphenylene sulphide PPS.
These bases 3 or 5 may be identical or different depending on the connection terminals that the connector is supposed to electrically connect. These bases can be mounted straight or bent on an integrated circuit or in front of an external box.

The bases 3 and 5 further comprise, at their lateral ends, pierced lugs 9 in which articulated fasteners 11 shown schematically on the can be accommodated. figure 2 . These articulated fasteners 11 have the function of maintaining the gap between the bases 3 and 5 in a certain operating range.

These first and second bases 3 and 5 respectively carry ends of connection elements 7 which are represented in detail on the figures 3 , 4 and 5 . The electrical connection elements 7 are made of metal.

We will now describe in more detail the connection elements 7 according to the figures 3 , 4 and 5 .

The electrical connection element 7 comprises a first electrical contact portion 13 and a second electrical contact portion 15, for example made of CuZn brass, and a rigid electrical connection member 17, for example made of bronze BZ4 or else copper-beryllium CuBe2 alloy, one end of which is connected via a first hinge 19 to the first contact portion 13 and whose second end is connected via a second hinge 21 to the second electrical contact portion 15.

These joints 19 and 21 are made in the form of a ball joint.

According to the embodiment of Figures 1 to 5 , the rigid electrical connection member 17 is formed by a rod 23 carrying at each end a ball 25 and each part 13 and 15 of electrical contact comprises a socket-shaped end 27 receiving an associated ball joint 25.

Ce canal 29 présente une longueur L permettant un mouvement de translation de la rotule 25 à l'intérieur de la douille 27.As we see on the figure 4 , the sleeve 27 has a receiving channel 29 of an associated ball 25. This channel 29 has a length L allowing a translational movement of the ball 25 inside the sleeve 27.

According to an embodiment not shown, each sleeve 27 may have a narrowing at its insertion end of the ball 25 to serve as a stop for an associated ball when it has been introduced to prevent the joint can disassemble.

Thus, it is expected that the outer diameter of the ball 25 without constraints is slightly greater than the inner diameter of the sleeve 27 and therefore the channel 29 so that during the introduction of the ball 25 in the channel 29, the ball is compressed and the four segments 31 of the ball are resiliently held within the associated socket 27 against the inner walls of the channel 29. Thus, it is possible to establish an electrical connection securely between a portion 13 or 15 of electrical contact and the In addition, a certain mechanical hold is also obtained between the parts 13 and 15 and the connecting member 17.

Moreover, we can see Figures 1 to 4 that the end of the parts 13 and 15 of electrical contact opposite the sleeve 27 carries a plug 32. Of course, a version in socket is also possible. These plugs 32 are intended to cooperate with conjugate plugs of a not shown conjugate connector.

Referring to the figure 1 it can be seen that these male plugs 32 or alternatively female plugs, are received in associated complementary housing 33 provided on the bases 3 or 5, so that the latter can carry a plurality of connecting elements 7 arranged parallel to each other in the example shown.

On the figure 5 , the electrical connecting member 17 has a general shape of a bone with a cylindrical central portion 35 having approximately the same diameter as the diameter of the ball joints 25. This allows a better maintenance during machining in bar turning.

On the figure 6 is represented a variant of the connecting member 17 which differs from the version of the figure 5 in that the central portion 35 is of smaller section than the ball joints 25 and has a cross section in the form of a square.

Cette disposition permet la fabrication de connecteurs coudés, par exemple à 90°.On the figure 7 is represented a variant of the connecting member 17 which differs from the version of the figure 5 in that the central part of the rod is bent. This arrangement allows the manufacture of connectors bent, for example at 90 °.

The variant represented on the Figures 8 and 9 differs from that of figures 3 and 4 in that it is not the ball joints 25 which are split, but the sockets 27 along their longitudinal axis.

In these figures, it is even better to see that the ball joints 25 can slide inside the sleeve 27.

The embodiment of the Figures 10 and 11 differs from that of figures 3 and 4 in that the rigid electrical connection member is formed by a rod 23 carrying at each end a sleeve 27 and each electrical contact portion 13, 15 comprises a ball-shaped end 25 inserted into an associated socket 27.

In this embodiment, the sleeves 27 are slotted, but it is also possible that they are spherical slits that are split as described above without departing from the scope of the present invention.

According to yet another variant represented on the figure 12 , one can provide to maintain the ball inside the socket with a clip 40 inserted into the sleeve which exerts a resilient force holding against the inner wall of the sleeve. This clip can for example a simple open metal ring.

According to an alternative embodiment of the connector 1 represented on the figure 13 the gap between the bases 3 and 5 is maintained by a block 41 of an elastic material and insulation which coats the electrical connecting members 7. This avoids the use of hinged fasteners 11 as in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. figure 2 .

Block 41 ( figure 13 ) of elastic material is for example made of silicone, preferably by molding. By way of example, the hardness of the silicone is between 40 and 50 Shore.

In this case, the bases 3 and 5 are then fixed on the block 41, for example by gluing with a silicone adhesive.

En se référant à la figure 14, on constate que le bloc 41 présente deux logements 43 et 45 pour recevoir respectivement les embases 3 et 5, et des orifices 47 pour recevoir les organes de liaison 17 en laissant libres leurs extrémités, c'est à dire que ces extrémités font saillie dans les logements 43 et 45 du bloc 41 pour permettre de relier ces extrémités aux premières 13 et aux secondes 15 parties de contact électrique des embases 3 et 5.Referring to the figure 14 , it is found that the block 41 has two housings 43 and 45 for respectively receiving the bases 3 and 5, and orifices 47 to receive the connecting members 17 leaving their ends free, ie that these ends project into the housings 43 and 45 of the block 41 to make it possible to connect these ends to the first 13 and the second 15 parts of electrical contact of the bases 3 and 5.

The housings 43 and 45 have a shape complementary to that of the bases 3 and 5. In the example illustrated on the Figures 14 and 15 the base 3.5 comprises a substantially parallelepipedal central body and the housing 43, 45 has a cross section of generally "U" -shaped shape with two side walls 49.

According to the embodiment illustrated, the attachment is then between the side walls 49 of the housing 43,45 and the side walls 51 of the base 3,5.

For this, one can provide for example a groove (not shown) on the side walls 51 of the bases 3.5 in which is inserted glue.

In addition, such a connector 1 has a smaller height compared to the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. Figures 1 and 2 . Indeed, the height of the bases 3,5 can be reduced compared to the bases of the embodiment of the Figures 1 and 2 , and the block 41 may have a small height, for example of the order of 5 mm.

Moreover, as can be seen from the figure 15 the bases 3.5 respectively comprise two end portions each having for example an orifice 53 for fastening by screwing on the conjugate connector.

Thus, the assembly of such a connector 1 with reference to Figures 13 to 16 , comprises a first step E1 in which the first electrical contact portions 13 are inserted into the first base 3 and into which the second electrical contact portions 15 are inserted into the second base 5.

During a second step E2, the electrical connection members 17 are inserted into the block made of elastic and insulating material, leaving the ends of the electrical connection members 17 free, ie the first ends project from the housing 43 of the block 41 and the second opposite ends protrude from the housing 45 of the block 41.

It is then possible to assemble during a step E3 the first base 3 on the block 41 with the first contact portions 13 facing the first ends of the electrical connection members 17 and to connect the first ends via the first articulations 19. electrical connecting members 17 on the first contact portions (13).

De façon similaire, on monte lors d'une étape E4 la deuxième embase 5 sur le bloc 41 avec les secondes parties de contact 15 en vis-à-vis des secondes extrémités des organes de liaison électrique 17 et on relie via les secondes articulations 21 les secondes extrémités des organes de liaison électrique 17 sur les secondes parties de contact 15.Similarly, during a step E4, the second base 5 is mounted on the block 41 with the second contact portions 15 opposite the second ends of the electrical connection members 17 and is connected via the second hinges 21 the second ends of the electrical connecting members 17 on the second contact portions 15.

Enfin, on fixe à l'étape E5 les embases 3,5 sur le bloc 41.Finally, in step E5, the bases 3.5 are fixed on the block 41.

This provides a simple assembly of the connector 1. Of course, the order of some steps of this assembly process can be reversed.

Thus, thanks to these articulated electrical connection elements, it is possible to make a connector that makes it possible to overcome the tolerances and games, between for example a PCB and a rack and their respective connectors.

It is therefore easy to understand that the connector presented above allows a quick mounting of a card in a rack while providing flexibility.

In an even more advanced version, the bases are equipped with guiding means cooperating with complementary guiding means of the conjugate connector so that one obtains through the flexibility of the connector 1 a kind of self-alignment of the connectors.

It eliminates the need for tedious welding and allows the secure connection of the electrical connection.
