A cet effet, selon l'invention, pour chaque boite d'essieu est prévue au moins une paire d'anneaux obliques de liaison (ces anneaux peuvent être remplacés par tout organe équivalent; par exemple des bielles ou des chandelles de suspension, ou bien des doubles anneaux du type prescrit par l'Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer) disposés symétriquement de part et d'autre de l'essieu, les angles que font ces deux anneaux avec la verticale étant toutefois légèrement différents, tandis que la boite d'essieu s'appuie au repos avec une certaine force (dépendant de la différence desdits angles) contre l'une des plaques de garde. Cette force est égale à la résultante, de direction longitudinale, des composantes horizontales des forces qui s'exercent sur les anneaux de liaison en raison du poids du châssis suspendu; elle n'est pas nulle, grâce à la différence d'obliquité donnée aux anneaux, et a pour effet de repousser les boites d'essieu contre les plaques de garde situées d'un côté de l'essieu. Cette force définit un seuil en deça duquel l'essieu est stable et au delà duquel l'essieu est orientable par déplacement des boîtes d'essieu dans leur encagement. Ce dernier cas se produit dans les courbes de faible rayon où les efforts d'orientation dont l'essieu est le siège dépassent ledit seuil, de sorte que l'essieu peut se placer en direction radiale dans de telles courbes.
