Mob Psycho 100

Eighth-grader Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama has tapped into his inner wellspring of psychic prowess at a young age. But the power quickly proves to be a liability when he realizes the potential danger in his skills. Choosing to suppress his power, Mob's only present use for his ability is to impress his longtime crush, Tsubomi, who soon grows bored of the same tricks.

In order to effectuate control on his skills, Mob enlists himself under the wing of Arataka Reigen, a con artist claiming to be a psychic, who exploits Mob's powers for pocket change. Now, exorcising evil spirits on command has become a part of Mob's daily, monotonous life. However, the psychic energy he exerts is barely the tip of the iceberg; if his vast potential and unrestrained emotions run berserk, a cataclysmic event that would render him completely unrecognizable will be triggered. The progression toward Mob's explosion is rising and attempting to stop it is futile.

This is a review of seasons 1, 2, and 3.

One of the most visually striking series I've ever had the pleasure of watching. It's like they took everything that made One Punch Man so great and cranked it up to 11! Or, I guess in this case, 100. It's worth watching just for the visuals, alone. But there's also a lot to love in the story and character department, as well. It has very similar beats and story structure to One Punch Man, as you'd expect. The main protagonist is literally invincible, so there's no question on what the outcome of every fight is gonna ... be. So it's the lead up to each fight and the in-between interactions with the characters that are the real heart and soul of the show. One of my biggest criticisms with One Punch Man was that there were a LOT of characters that had their own plots happening separate from the main cast that I would often gloss over, thinking that these characters must not be that important if they aren't directly interacting with Saitama. I had a similar issue with Mob Psycho, but it's a little different. They did a much better job of having the minor characters be more involved in Mob and Reigen's lives, so it felt more natural for all these moving pieces to be connected with one another. However, there's a new issue I had in which Mob and Reigen are SOOOOO good, that I was just BEGGING for more scenes with just the two of them. I loved their dynamic so much and I loved seeing every intricate part of their personalities come to light as the show progressed. I don't think anything was left unresolved, but I just selfishly wish I had even more of just the two of them because they worked so well to the point where I don't think we really needed much else. I do still love Mob's interactions with the Body Improvement Club and seeing the one-off mystery episodes. Like Mob's power level or whatever you wanna call it, my enjoyment of the show just increased more and more as time went on. Definitely keep watching all the way to the end. Even if it doesn't grab you at first, I promise you it will when all is said and done.

Mixed Feelings

6.0/10 ~ Visual masterpiece with little substance

I originally watched bits and pieces of this one with some friends when it first launched and I really didnt enjoy it, I think when I joined MAL I gave it a 5/10 and that was generous to how I felt. Honestly I think I let outside circumstances cloud my judgment on that initial review and I really did not give the show a chance. I binged the entire Season 1 in a single sitting today and I must say its much better then I originally thought. Sure all the enjoyment is packed literally into the very unique art ... style and the constant gag humor but man did some of those jokes really hit. However for every joke that hit, there was 2-3 more that I just did not find funny and or they went over my head. I do think this show is a bit overrated especially now that the hype has cooled down quite a bit.

Pros:
- The art style is the biggest draw to this show, if you do not like this, then you should probably pass
- When the humor is good, it really slaps
- Honestly one of the most fitting into songs to a show ive ever seen
- fight scenes are pretty good if that is your thing
- alot of the morals the show trys to push (and make fun of) are actually pretty good
- love the show doesnt take itself seriously
- Tho MC is boring, much of the supporting cast is pretty likeable
- English Dub is decent

Cons:
- most of season 1 gets pretty slice of lifey and feels very out of place, doesnt add much and is really slow, especially for a Shonen
- music during the show are pretty unrememberable
- when the jokes are not funny they feel like a waste of time
- MC is boring as hell... kinda the point but still dont like it
- much of the cast arnt quite paper cut outs but due to being a gag-anime they are closer to caricatures
- plot is riddled with holes...dont think about it

Over all I think if you enjoy Shonen as a general medium then you will most likely enjoy this one. If you are like me and generally dont care too much for fight scenes then you may want to watch this for the incredible art style/animation. This show is kinda boring for much of the run time and really leans on its humor to move forward so with that in mind I really could see anyone giving this a 8/10+ to even saying "this is my favorite anime", and I understand this one just is not for me, but I still enjoyed it enough to move on to season 2. Remember that 5/10 is average and anything over a 6.5/10 in my opinion is worth mentioning.

**Edit: After watching Season2 I have concluded this needs to be dropped down to 6.0/10 from my original 6.5/10, S2 is just better marginally.

Mob Psycho 100 (2016)

Who knew that those Youtube videos of fights would be literally the best bits of the whole show. This has to be one of the most overrated 5/10 shows I have seen in a long time. It's just an Isekai without leaving the world, so yes not an Isekai but still the overpowered main, with average friends and people trying to contain him. You do get rage and overpowered moments but then it tries to be funny which the show isn't by making it all comical.

The story tries to be a slice of life but misses out on most of the ... life aspects. It tries to be funny and yet I never laughed. It tries to be full of action but then it is such a small portion of the show and then it has supernatural, yes it does just average in the way it does though. The story itself is pretty dull and it tries to make it seem like there is a point to it all but then there isn't. A slice of life is a slice of life, and a plot is a plot. Trying to do both at the same time just doesn't really work.

The art is oldish, it is comic book style but then boring. It tries to be flashy but it falls down at the last hurdle by hiding mediocre style behind the screen of art style. Characters all sort of feeling dull and it doesn't particularly excite me at all.

The sound should be big, huge, and crazy when they fight but it does nothing. The voices are fine, music is okay but the main thing you want in the fight is lacking. Imagine watching a war film with BB gun noises instead of rifle noises, that is what this is. You can make something look as flashy as you want but if the sound doesn't match then there is no point.

The characters are wide and varied but still dull, boring, and unimagined. Mob himself is one of the most boring protagonists I have ever seen.

Maybe I came too late but then I've watched shows from the 1980s with more excitement than this. Had a read through the source material and it isn't much better. The story is all over the place trying to cover a mass of directions and routes all at once whilst not really doing anything. It is a solid 4/10 in the end for me. The hype train definitely should have gone through this station and not stopped.
