The Settings dialog can be opened by choosing "ChromaFiler Settings" in the menu (), if it's visible, or by pressing Ctrl+,

General

The "General" page of the Settings dialog

  • Starting folder: The folder that appears when first launching ChromaFiler, or when you middle-click / shift-click the taskbar icon. You can select any folder with a file browser or choose one of the special folders in the dropdown, which have special syntax:
    • shell:Desktop: Desktop folder
    • shell:MyComputerFolder: "This PC"
    • shell:Links: Links folder
    • shell:Recent: Recent Items
    • shell:::{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}: Quick access / Home (Windows 10+)
  • Default window sizes: The default window dimensions for folders and files, given as width x height in pixels. If you resize a particular folder window, it will remember its size and will not be affected by this setting.
  • Open selection delay: Adjust the delay time after selecting an item in a folder before the window is shown.
  • Show info text: Enable the info text at the top of the window
  • Show toolbar: Enable the toolbar buttons at the top of the window
  • Use Preview Handlers: Use installed Preview Handler extensions to display previews for files (eg. PDFs)
  • File Explorer options: Open the File Explorer Options control panel. Some of these options also affect ChromaFiler windows, for example:
    • Show hidden files, folders, and drives
    • Hide extensions for known file types
    • Use check boxes to select items
    • Single-click to open

Text Editor

These settings apply to the built-in text editor.

The "Text Editor" page of the Settings dialog

  • Enable text editor: All files that would normally be previewed as plain text files will be opened with the text editor. This also includes files without extensions. To configure which file types are opened by the text editor, see Preview Handlers.
  • Auto-indent: When enabled, whitespace at the start of lines is preserved when you press Enter
  • Font: Adjust the text font, size, and style
  • Tabs: Adjust the width of tabs (default 4 spaces)
  • Save format: These settings control the encoding of text files, for compatibility between programs and operating systems. It's recommended to leave them at the default.
    • When Auto-detect is checked, the text editor will default to saving files with the same encoding / line endings as they were opened with, and use the specified settings only for new files. When Auto-detect is unchecked, files will always be saved with the specified encoding / line endings, no matter their original format.
  • Scratch folder: The folder where new scratch files are created
    • File name: Default file name/extension for new scratch files (suffix automatically added in case of duplicates)

Tray

These settings apply to the Tray window.

The "Tray" page of the Settings dialog

  • Show tray: Check this to open the tray, using the currently selected folder path
  • Open tray on startup: Open the tray when you log in (it may take some time)
  • Enable Win+Alt+C hotkey to focus tray: When enabled, you can use this keyboard shortcut at any time to focus the Tray window.
  • Tray folder: The folder displayed in the tray. Similar to the Starting folder setting you can choose from a set of special folders in the dropdown, or browse for your own.
  • Tray direction: Which side of the tray should windows appear when an item is selected
  • Reset tray position: Move the tray back to the primary monitor

Default Browser

The "Default Browser" page of the Settings dialog

  • Set as default browser: This will make ChromaFiler open all folders by default; eg. if you double-click a folder on your desktop, it will open in ChromaFiler instead of File Explorer. Since this option replaces built-in Windows functionality it could cause unexpected behavior.
  • Reset default browser: This will restore File Explorer as the default file browser.

Update/About

The "About" page of the Settings dialog

  • Help / Website / Donate: These are just links to web pages, clicking them will open your web browser
  • Check for update: If an updated version is available, you will be taken to a web page to download the installer.
  • Automatically check for updates weekly: ChromaFiler will notify you if it finds an update available online
