500 Oops! Looks like we're having server issues, fresh install #811

Hello!

I'm so sorry to bother everyone, I'm struggling to get Plausible up and running, I've been looking at this for while and just can't figure how what I have done wrong with the configuration. I haven't configured any extras yet only the core service and reverse proxy so I can access the system.

Running inside the container I can see this error message when I try to access the webpage:-

plausible_1 | 21:37:25.338 request_id=** [warn] Failed to send Sentry event.Cannot send Sentry event because of invalid DSN

I don't have much experience with the technologies used in the service apart from docker but I can't find many entries to this issue in the community forum. Hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction!

This Sentry message is a warning you can safely ignore. It would not cause a 500 error. Can you see anything else in the logs?

These logs are from the app starting up, I don't see anything related to a request failing with 500.

Could you boot the app with LOG_LEVEL=debug in the plausible-conf.env file. Then wait for everything to boot up and clear the logs. Then make the request that causes 500. And then paste the logs here with the debug logs.

So confusing. Surely this is the cause:

[debug] Converted error ArgumentError to 500 response

But without a stacktrace it's impossible to know where the error came from. I don't know why it doesn't print a stacktrace even with debug level logging ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Looking at the code, the only thing I can come up with is maybe you don't have admin email and password configured correctly. Can you paste the contents of your plausible-conf.env, retracting sensitive information?

If your config is correct I'm out of ideas.

@julienma Thanks for reporting. I've added a check during app boot to validate the secret key base. In the next release the app will not boot up with an invalid SECRET_KEY_BASE: be26662

Issue still present for me. I also tried v1.3.0-rc.1 and the same problem - 500 error on anything that requires sending an email.

I've tried Mailgun and Gmail, several ports, SSL enabled and disabled... nothing works. I can't even activate my initial account because it 500's instead of sending my code :( Can I at least enable additional logging or something to get a real error message?

You can try rebooting the app with LOG_LEVEL=debug in the config and triggering the 500 issue manually to see what gets logged.

The logs aren't great and it's something I've been looking at to fix: #926 (comment)
