Skills Matrix

Overview

This is the Skills Matrix we'll use to onboard new volunteers:
- The job poster checks the skills that will be flexed in the job.
- The volunteer checks the skills they already have.

We need to add screens for role seekers to self evaluate skills and role posters to indicate what they need in the person filling the role.

• Role titles are hard to use because they mean different things to different people and organizations
• We need an objective way to connect people with roles

If it is not a fit for purpose then it is not MVP

There is a need for the Civic Tech Jobs tool to:

• make it easier for open roles to be posted
• to enforce organizational requirements i.e. Kanban board management (one classic project board for the team) and label criteria on issues

Pros for Skills Matrix:

• Helps navigate the number of job titles that disciplines have i.e. UX Design roles
• Lets job poster view candidates with the skills they need
• Lets job seeker view roles that they would be interested in/uses their skills

Setbacks for Skills Matrix:

• need to teach teams for not to go crazy on the skills they choose for the role i.e. choosing expert and knowledge of one skill or asking for too much

Other solutions:

• API that connects with project team boards and filters issues ready for person with specific discipline to work on
  • This would require a reinforcement standard of having a single board per project team, has a size label , and skill level label

Takeaways

• Need to reinforce good organizational practices such as Kanban organization for the continuation of the open source nature of our projects and longevity of the organization
• Want to enforce teams who are looking to fill a role - to have issues ready for folks
