what do you mean for "no way to differentiate between different languages"? |
I meant that when using the RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE properties, all languages use the same launcher. Using the variable gives us more fine control over which compilers should use ccache. ccache seems to be pretty stable, their only caveats are set around race conditions when a file is created during compilation. In the worst case, you can always force a full recompile with |

LGTM. thanks for explanation.
Yes, I agree with using CMAKE_<LANG>_COMPILER_LAUNCHER
gives the control.
but if we would like to use it on hip, do we need RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE
for it?
If it works for every language (up to it pass the job to compiler entirely), maybe RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE
is good enough.
Since HIP currently doesn't have CMake or ccache support at all, this would probably not matter in the near time. |

LGTM.
I wouldn't go with the full RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE
since our setup is really complex.

Ginkgo release 1.4.0 The Ginkgo team is proud to announce the new Ginkgo minor release 1.4.0. This release brings most of the Ginkgo functionality to the Intel DPC++ ecosystem which enables Intel-GPU and CPU execution. The only Ginkgo features which have not been ported yet are some preconditioners. Ginkgo's mixed-precision support is greatly enhanced thanks to: 1. The new Accessor concept, which allows writing kernels featuring on-the-fly memory compression, among other features. The accessor can be used as header-only, see the [accessor BLAS benchmarks repository](https://github.com/ginkgo-project/accessor-BLAS/tree/develop) as a usage example. 2. All LinOps now transparently support mixed-precision execution. By default, this is done through a temporary copy which may have a performance impact but already allows mixed-precision research. Native mixed-precision ELL kernels are implemented which do not see this cost. The accessor is also leveraged in a new CB-GMRES solver which allows for performance improvements by compressing the Krylov basis vectors. Many other features have been added to Ginkgo, such as reordering support, a new IDR solver, Incomplete Cholesky preconditioner, matrix assembly support (only CPU for now), machine topology information, and more! This PR adds ccache as a compiler launcher if it is available. Things we would probably need to decide: When do we want to enable this? GINKGO_DEVEL_TOOLS? GINKGO_WITH_CCACHE (default to ON or OFF?) If ccache was found?

He suggests there using the RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE property, though I am not if this is a good choice for us? It gives us no way to differentiate between different languages, the language-specific variables seem more specific. If users have CMake 3.17 or newer, they can even use an environment variable to set it manually.
