A bibliophile is someone who loves books. Bibliophiles may love books for their content, in which case they are often also called bookworms, or they may be book collectors. The classic bibliophile loves to read, admire and collect books, often amassing a large and specialized collection. They do not necessarily want to own the books they love; an alternative would be owning only unusual bindings and autographed copies. Bibliophilia is often exaggerated in anime, to a point bibliophiles tend to live in houses full of books, suffering from accidents where they end buried under piles of books, and spending all their time in libraries. There also exists an obsessive–compulsive disorder involving the collecting of books to the point where social relations or health is damaged, called bibliomania; in that case, the mere fact that an object is a book is sufficient for it to be collected or loved. While bibliomania is different from bibliophilia, anime characters thought to be bibliomaniacs are generally just exaggerated bibliophiles, so this distinction is disregarded.
