John Byng, 5th Viscount Torrington was born on 18 February 1742/43.2 He was the son of Maj.-Gen. George Byng, 3rd Viscount Torrington and Elizabeth Daniel.2 He married Bridget Forrest, daughter of Commodore Arthur Forrest, on 3 March 1767.2 He died on 8 January 1813 at age 69.
He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, England.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1776 in the Grenadier Guards.2 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Torrington, co. Devon [G.B., 1721] on 14 December 1812.2 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Byng, of Wrotham, Kent [G.B., 1715] on 14 December 1812.2 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Byng of Southill, co. Bedford [G.B., 1721] on 14 December 1812.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
He wrote the book The Torrington Diaries, published 1934, edited by C. Bruyn Andrews.2
