Why Teachers Shouldn't Be Boring

How many times have you heard someone say, "I just can't stand that class!" or, "It's so boring,"? These are things college students everywhere say on a daily basis. It's the struggle of forcing yourself to go to class when you know you will be on your laptop googling funny animal pictures or doing your homework for other classes.

You know you should go to class because you are paying thousands of dollars a year and feel like you are just hurting yourself if you don't, but you can honestly say you haven't retained even a third of what you've learned throughout the semester because that professor is just so terrible.

I love walking into class knowing I will be asked to show that I understand the material that I'm learning. I would rather go to a class where I am asked to do something the entire time that makes me really use my brain than sit like a zombie listening to a monotone voice talk nonsense for an hour and fifteen minutes.

I'm sure it's not too easy being a college professor these days knowing that kids can be doing all sorts of other things while you're lecturing. But, don't you think you can tell if kids aren't paying attention or are focusing on anything other than what you're talking about?

Teachers need to be interactive with their students. They need to have them apply their knowledge of topics and need to show their interest in the topic as well. Even young adults interact better with things when you can tell the person teaching you is very interested in the topic.

If you're the type of teacher who will just ramble on about your personal life or keep droning on and on about a topic without any student involvement maybe you should rethink the way you're doing things.

In my opinion, people shouldn't dread going to a class. The class I enjoy the most I truly don't want to miss because I want to be the most up to date on everything that is happening so I am better prepared for life in the future.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
