Dear Reader,

My name is Elizabeth Mors I am currently an Eighth Grade Science teacher at

Warren Woods Middle School in Warren, Michigan. Warren Woods Public Schools is
not only where I currently teach but also where I attended for most of my own K-12
Education. I am currently in my second year at Warren Woods Middle School. I
completed my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Integrated
Sciences at Michigan State University in May 2018. Upon graduation I completed
student teaching in a First Grade classroom at Seminole Academy in Mount Clemens
Community Schools. Once I finished my student teaching, I accepted a long-term
subbing position at Warren Woods Middle School within the English department which
led me to my love for teaching middle school and assisted in my job search the
following summer.
Warren Woods Public Schools services just over 3,000 students. Around 74% of
those students are Caucasian, 16% African American, and 6% Asian. Warren is a
middle-class neighborhood ranking as the third largest in the state of Michigan. The
median salary within our district lines is $53,000. most adults are part of the working
class with many performing blue- and white-collar jobs. Warren Woods Middle School is
not a Title I school but around 50% of our student population qualifies for free or
reduced lunch. Warren Woods helps their own and has been recognized for the
Community Pantry that is housed in my building for district families who may need food,
clothes, or personal hygiene products. This is volunteer operated by Parent Teacher
Committees and our district councilors.
As mentioned above, after my student teaching, I accepted a long-term substitute
teaching position where I taught Eighth Grade English from the end of April- June. While
I always thought I wanted to be an Elementary Teacher, this position felt like home and
was a pivotal experience for my job search. I switched my objective to finding a Middle
School Science position that summer. This led me to accepting an Eighth Grade
Science position at Warren Woods Middle School. This community has helped me grow
into the person and educator I am today, and I love being home. In Eighth Grade
Science is comprised of Earth and Space Science. This year I have had many switches
to the number of sections I have. We traditionally each teach an elective that aligns with
our core content but due to COVID19 and smaller class sections they have been cut so
we can teach more sections of our core classes. In addition to smaller class sizes, we
are accommodating in person and virtual learners. I now teach five sections of science
two face to face and three are virtual.
Prior to the COVID19 pandemic my department was developing our goals and
plans for a new Science curriculum. This project sparked my interest in Curriculum
Development and Professional Development and led me to the MATC program Spring
2020. The MATC courses have pushed me to think about leadership, curriculum, and
human resource development in new ways. My portfolio represents my journey through
questioning and developing my own leadership skills and thought process regarding
curriculum. The MATC Program has ignited a new interest in advocating for curriculum
that maintains greater longevity in our public schools to better serve our students.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Mors
