QA – Remainders

HCD WITH REMAINDERS

A) Numbers and remainders given
1) Find the greatest possible number with which when we divide 37 and 58, it leaves the
respective remainder of 2 and 3.
Since when we divide 37 and 58 by the same number then we get remainders 2 and 3
respectively. So ( ) and ( ) must be divisible hence leaving the remainders zero. It
means 35 and 55 both are divisible by that number so the HCF of 35 and 55 is 5. Hence the
greatest possible number is 5.
2) Find the largest possible number with which when 60 and 98 are divided it leaves the
remainders 3 in each case.
Since 60 and 98 both leave the remainders 3 when divided by such a number. Thus (
) and ( ) will be divisible by the same number without leaving may remainder. So
the HCF of 57 and 95 is 19. Hence 19 is the highest possible number.
B) Numbers given, a common but unknown remainder
1) Find the largest possible number with which when 38, 66 and 80 are divided the
remainders remains the same.
In this (since we do not know the value of remainder) we take the HCF of the difference of the
given numbers. So the HCF of ( )( )( )

Hence 14 is the largest possible number which leaves same remainder (=10) when it divides
either 38, 66 or 80.

LCM WITH REMAINDERS

A) When the remainders are same for all the divisors.
1) What is the least possible number which when divided by 24, 32 or 42 in each it leaves
the remainder 5?
Since we know that the LCM of 24, 32 and 42 is divisible by the given numbers. So the required
number is
) ( )
Hence such a least possible number is 677.
2) In the above question how may numbers are possible between 666 and 8888 ?

QA – Remainders

Since the form of such a number is 672 +5, where So, the first no.
and the highest possible number in the given range

Thus the total numbers between 666 and 8888 are 13.
3) What is the least possible number which when divided by 21,25, 27 and 35 it leaves the
remainder 2 in each ?
The least possible no.
( )

(for the least possible value we take )

4) What is the least possible on. which must be add to 4722 so that it becomes divisible by
21,25, 27 and 35 ?
The number which is divisible by 21, 25, 27 and 35 is the LCM of 21, 25, 27 and 35 = 4725. So
the required number
5) What is the least number which when divided by 8, 12 and 16 leaves 3 as the remainder
in each but when divided by 7 leaves no remainder ?
The possible value ( )
( )
Now put the value of such that “ ( ) ” becomes divisible by 7. So
which is the least possible required number.

6) There is a number which when divided by 4 and 5 gives 3 as the remainder. What is the
lowest three-digit number which satisfy this condition?
Let us assume that there is no remainder. So, the number has to be a multiple of LCM of 4 and
5. Now. LCM (4, 5) = 20. But there is a remainder of 3 when divided by 4 and 5. So, the number
will be of the form (20N + 3). Hence, the numbers are 23, 43, 63, 83, 103 and so on... So, 103 is
the answer.

B) When the remainders are different for different divisors but the respective difference
between the divisors and the remainders remain constant.

QA – Remainders

1) What is the least possible number which when divided by 18, 35 or 42 it leaves the 2,19,
26 as the remainders respectively ?
Since the difference between the divisors and the respective remainders is same.
Hence the least possible number
( )
[ ( ) ( ) ( ) ]

2) What is the least possible number which when divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 it leaves the
remainders 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 respectively ?
Since the difference is same as
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )( )
Hence the required number ( )

3) In the above problem what is the least possible 3 digit number which is divisible by 11 ?
Since the form of the number is where but the number ( )
should also be divisible by 11 hence at the number becomes 539 which is also divisible
by 11. Thus the required number = 539.
4) Find the least possible 5 digit number which when divided by 2, 4, 6 and 8, it leaves the
remainders 1, 3, 5 and 7 respectively.
The possible value ( )

Since, the least 5 digit number is 10000. So the required number must be atleast 10000. So
putting the value of , we get (10008-1)=10007, which is the required number.

C) When neither the divisors are same nor the respective difference between divisors
and the remainder remain constant.
1) What is the least possible number which when divided by 13 leaves the remainders 3
and when it is divided by 5 it leaves the remainder 2.
Let the required number be then it can be expressed as follows

….(1)
and ….(2)
where and are the quotients belong to the set of integers.
Thus

Now we put the value of such that numerator will be divisible by 5 or must be integer so
considering we find that , become 8. So the number
Thus the least possible number = 42
To get the higher numbers which satisfy the given conditions in the above problem we just add
the multiples of the given divisors ( 13 and 5) to the least possible number ( 42)
NOTE The next higher number ( )

2) In the above problem what is the greatest possible number of 4 digits ?

Since the general form of this number is so by putting we get (
) , which is required number.
HINT To get the value of 9945 we can simply divide 9999 (which is the greatest 4 digit
number) by 65 and then subtract the remainder from 9999.

3) How many numbers lie between 11 and 1111 which when divided by 9 leave a
remainder of 6 and when divide by 21 leave a remainder of 12?
Let the possible number be then it can be expressed as

and

or ( )

So put the min. possible value of such that the value of an integer or in other words
numerator ( ) will be divisible by 3.
Thus at , we get (an integer). So the least possible number
.
Now the higher possible values can be obtained by adding 33 in the multiples of LCM of 9 and
21 The general form of the number is So the other number in the given range
including 33 are 96, 159, 222, 285, 348, …, 1104. Hence there are total 18 numbers which
satisfy the given condition.
