Chapter 9: Properties of Mixtures

Problem 1. The need arises in the laboratory for 2,000 cm3 of antifreeze solution consisting of 30 mol %
methanol in water. What volumes of pure methanol and of pure water at 25 ◦C must be mixed to form the
2,000 cm3 of antifreeze, also at 25 ◦C? Partial molar volumes for methanol and water in a 30 mol % methanol
solution and their pure species molar volumes, both at 25 ◦C, are:
Methanol(1) V¯1 = 38.632cm3/mol V1 = 40.727cm3/mol
Water(2) V¯2 = 17.765cm3/mol V2 = 18.068cm3/mol

Problem 2. We have a binary liquid system of species 1 and 2 at fixed T and P . The partial molar volume
of species 1 is represented by the equation:
H̄1 = 420 − 60x21 + 40x31
where H̄1 is in J/mol. Additionally, we know that the pure component molar enthalpy of species 2 is:
H2 = 600 J/mol
Using only the provided information, can you determine expressions for H̄2 and H as functions of x1? If so,
what are they?

Problem 3. The molar enthalpy of a binary liquid system of species 1 and 2 at fixed T and P is represented
by the equation:
H = 400x1 + 600x2 + x1x2(40x1 + 20x2)

where H is in J/mol. Determine expressions for H̄1 and H̄2 as functions of x1, numerical values for the pure-
∞ ∞
species enthalpies H1 and H2, and numerical values for the partial enthalpies at infinite dilution H̄1 and H̄2 .

Problem 4. (Matsoukas Problem 9.10) A flow process is used to split a mixture of carbon monoxide (1)
and ethane (2) (stream A) into two streams, B and C. Information about the inlet and outlet streams is
shown in the table below.
a) Fill out the table.
b) Calculate the entropy change for this process.
A (inlet) B (outlet) C (outlet)
Molar flow (mol/s) 100
Mol fraction of CO 0.5 0.1 0.9
P (bar) 100 50 1
T (◦C) 25 0 25
S1ig (J/mol·K)
S2ig (J/mol·K)
S R (J/mol·K) –3.1 –30 0
S (J/mol·K)
Reference states for both components: ideal-gas state at 50 bar, 25 ◦C. Ideal-gas heat capacities: CPig,1 =
30 J/(mol · K); CPig,2 = 60 J/(mol · K).
