Swim Jig Buying Guide
When you’re buying a swim jig there are a few different things you will want to consider
- Size
- Color
- Additional Features
Size
Size is an important factor when choosing a swim jig. If you know you will be fishing it through grass, a smaller swim jig with a smaller profile will work better cranking it through the mess. However many experienced anglers choose to carry multiple sizes for different fishing situations. If you’re gonna cover all your bases you might want to carry a 1/4 ounce, 3/8 and 1/2 ounce with you so you can fish any place that’s needed. Sometimes you will want to fish deeper, or lower, or cover more water, at which point being able to quickly swap your jig out is a good bet.
Color
With so many color options, it can be intimidating to pick the right color for the right area. Brown colors are good for fishing rocky areas or around wood. White colored swim jigs are best used when the bass (or other species) are feeding on shad because it tends to look close to them. Green colored swim jigs are good when the fish are regularly eating bluegill. Darker colored black and blue swim jigs are good when fishing in dirty stained water or around vegetation.
Additional Features
Some jigs have additional features like a weed guard, vibrating blade, or swinging hook. You may already have a preference towards certain features, but these shouldn’t be of too much concern if you’re new to fishing. The trailer can often make a much bigger difference in the action of your swim jig. If the fish aren’t biting, swap out your trailer and try a different retrieve speed and see if that will trigger a few bites
