Britain’s Duncan Goodhew, a former collegiate swimmer in America at North Carolina State University, had won silver medals in both breaststroke events at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Earlier in 1980 he had swum 1:03.31 which ranked him #3 in the world coming into the Olympics. In the final in Moscow he was a touch behind Soviet Aleksandr Fedorovsky at the turn but powered home to win in 1:03.34, as Fedorovsky fell back to fourth. The silver went to his teammate Arsens Miskarovs, while Australia’s Peter Evans came home for the bronze in an Australian record 1:03.96.
