Biography

Peter Evans was the son of prominent Western Australian businessman and politician Max Evans. Peter had a late start to his swimming career, making his début at the 1979 Australian Championships, where he placed second to Lindsay Spencer in the 200 breaststroke. At the 1980 Australian championships, which also doubled as Australian Olympic trials, Evans won the 100 breaststroke title and also qualified in the 200 breast. At the Olympics, Evans won bronze in the 100 breaststroke and three days later helped the Australian medley relay team win Olympic gold.

After the Olympics, Evans enrolled at the University of Arizona where he studied business. In 1982 Evans competed at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, winning gold with the medley relay team and a bronze in the 100 breast. In 1983 he swam at the Universiade, again winning bronze in the 100 breaststroke. In 1984 Evans competed at his second Olympics, winning bronzes in the 100 breast and medley relay. Evans graduated from Arizona in 1985, also competing that year at the Universiade, but did not medal. Evans retired from competitive swimming in 1986 when he was not selected to the 1986 Australian Commonwealth Games team.

In early 1986, Evans also won pre-selection for the Liberal Party in the electoral district of Perth. He contested the seat in the state election, but lost despite a four percent swing against the Australian Labor Party. Evans then travelled around the world studying international market systems, before working in fund management and international investment.

Personal Bests: 100 m breaststroke – 1:02.87 (1984); 200 m breaststroke – 2:21.21 (1984).
