WHIV 102.3 FM had only been at its location on Orleans Avenue for more than a year when the August 5 floods inundated the studios. Among the items ruined by water was a battery that kicked in when there were electrical brown outs, a soundboard (though soldered shut, it may have still gotten moisture), and water came very close to affecting equipment in the control booth. Furniture and anything else on the ground was affected as well.
On Aug. 26, the radio station hosted a benefit to help raise funds to replace or repair what was lost. Hosted by United Bakery Records, the party showcased the Tumbling Wheels, who entertained supporters, young and old, and WHIV items were available for purchase.
The radio station, which launched on Dec. 1, 2014, World AIDS Day, features local music and programming dedicated to human rights and social justice. There are more than 70 hosts and DJs, and it streams online throughout the U.S. and to 85 countries around the world.
