Intravenous Cannula - IV Cannula
The cannula is a small tube inserted into the body, used for the
delivery of liquid or removal of fluid or for the collecting of samples. For example; a blood sample.
Check out
here what different types of cannula
are and sizes their uses.
A cannula is a hollow tube, retractable (able to be drawn back) which has a sharp inner core, that is inserted into
a vein, an artery, or another body cavity.
Intravenous (IV) cannulation or venous cannula or IV cannula are inserted into a vein,
primarily administration of intravenous fluids, drugs, or obtaining blood
samples.
Healthcare providers must have knowledge about What types
of IV fluids are given and how to deliver fluid directly to the vein.
Parts of Cannula
The parts of IV Cannula is-
1. Flashback Chamber
2. Needle Grip
3. Luer Lock Plug
4. Luer Connector
5. Valve
6. Injection Port Cap
7. Catheter Hub + Wings
8. Bushing
9. Catheter
10. Needle
3 Way IV Cannula – 3 Way Stopcock
The IV cannula is
integrated with a 3-way stop cock that facilitates simultaneous infusion of
fluids or additional medication.
It
provides 3-way fluid flow by use of top of the stopcock to open and close
lines.
1. From
inlet to outlet
2. Inlet
to side-port
3. Side
port to an outlet
For
example, a 3-way cannula stopcock has three positions-
1. Liquid
flows between points A and B.
2. Liquid flows between points A and C.
3. Liquid flows between points B and C.

what are different types of iv
catheters and their sizes and uses.
4 Way Cannula - 4 Way Stopcock
A
4-way cannula stopcock allows for 360° of rotation and has four available
positions.
1. In
the first, liquid flows between points A and B.
2. In the second, liquid flows between points A and C.
3. In the third, liquid flows between points B and C.
4. In the fourth (in 4-way stopcock only), liquid flows between all three
points.
