Trent Reznor - The Man, His Bands, Influences & Co

That's him.

TR's best-known band - the one that made him famous. He started the group in 1988 and was the only official member until the inclusion of Atticus Ross in 2016. All other band members are more or less only active for touring and have often changed from touring cycle to touring cycle.

Nine Inch Nails can't be attributed to one genre. Starting out as a synthpop oriented rockgroup its direction soon developed more into electropunk and industrial rock. But the band always remains pioneering new styles and around the release of "Year Zero" in 2007 it also adapted and developed new business models for the distribution of the music.

Founded in 2010 this is a project of Trent Reznor, his wife Mariqueen Maandig Reznor and his longtime collaborators Atticus Ross and Rob Sheridan.

The band has released two EPs and one studio album so far.

Tapeworm was a super group, featuring Trent Reznor, Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails/Killing Joke), Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails), Maynard James Keenan (Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer), Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails/DEVO), Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder.

The band started as a side project by Reznor and his bandmates Lohner and clouser and was active roughly between 1995 and 2004. The group recorded demos together but never released any songs. Trent Reznor claimed that the demos they recorded were not as great as you would expect from such a group, so they decided against publishing them.

Slam Bamboo was a late 1980's pop band from Cleveland, for which Trent Reznor played keyboards. It also featured future Nine Inch Nails drummer Ron Musarra.

Exotic Birds were a synthpop band from Cleveland, Ohio. Active between 1983 and 1988. Trent Reznor joined the band in 1986 and stayed till the split of the band in 1988. His roommate and later NIN-member Chris Vrenna also joined the band, shortly after TR. Trent also appeared with the Exotic Birds as the fictional band "The Problems" in the movie Light of Day in 1987.

In 1990 the group reformed, but without Trent Reznor. Their second run lasted until 1994.

After Trent Reznor dropped out of college and moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1985 he joined The Innocent.

The Innocent have released one album "Livin' in the Street", but Trent Reznor quit after just three months and joined Exotic Birds.

He later said about The Innocent: "Foreigner crap...dinosaur AOR bullshit rock."

Trent Reznor's first band. He joined the band when he enrolled in Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Option 30 played several shows and recorded one demo tape in 1983 that was released after Trent Reznor was successful with Nine Inch Nails.

Trent left the band when he dropped out of college after only one year, while the band continued as a trio before breaking up in 1986.

Atticus Ross is a member of How to Destroy Angels and Tapeworm and has produced the Nine Inch Nails albums "With Teeth", "Year Zero", "Ghosts I-IV" (on which he was also a co-writer) and "The Slip". Since 2016 he is an official band member of Nine Inch Nails.

Together with Trent Reznor Atticus Ross produced other acts, including Saul Williams, Zach de la Rocha and Jane's Addiction. In 2010, they have composed the Oscar- and Golden-Globe-winning soundtrack for the movie "The Social Network" together, followed by multiple other movie soundtracks.

Atticus Ross has also worked as a producer for Barry Adamson, Coheed and Cambria, KoRn, Grace Jones, Perry Farrell and Union of Knives. He is a member of the band 12 Rounds and has composed the soundtrack for the movie "The Book of Eli", among other score projects, on his own.

How to Destroy Angels (2013-present)

Alessandro Cortini is a live band member of Nine Inch Nails since 2004. He has also been part of How to Destroy Angels' live shows and helped with NIN work in the studio.

He has worked as a touring member of The Mayfield Four and as a fill-in keyboarder for Muse. He is also a permanent member of the Los Angeles based band modwheelmood and has other solo projects as blindoldfreak and SONOIO.

With the start of "Forse 1" in 2013 Cortini has released a variety of instrumental music albums.

Robin Finck is the current guitarist of Nine Inch Nails. He first joined the band in 1994. He has dropped out of the band twice to play with Guns n' Roses where he replaced Slash and played on the album "Chinese Democracy". In 2008 he returned to Nine Inch Nails again.

Robin Finck can also be heard playing on Marilyn Manson's "Antichrist Superstar" and the "Ghosts of Mars" movie soundtrack.

Ilan Rubin is the current drummer of Nine Inch Nails. After being the youngest person to play the Woodstock festival with his band f.o.n. in 1999 he had a brief stint with lostprophets before joining Nine Inch Nails in 2009.

Under the name The New Regime Ilan Rubin has released multiple albums as a solo artist. Since 2011 he is also a member of Angels & Airwaves.

Mariqueen Maandig Reznor is the singer of How to Destroy Angels and wife of Trent Reznor.

Prior to forming the band she was the vocalist of West Indian Girl between 2004 and 2009. She can also be heard providing backing vocals on "Not the Actual Events" and "Bad Witch".

Rob Sheridan is the long time creative director of Nine Inch Nails and an official member of How to Destroy Angels. He was recruited in 1999 on basis of a fan page he created that Trent Reznor was impressed with and stayed art director until 2014.

As an official member of How to Destroy Angels he is also responsible for the art direction as well as the live show, which he orchestrates from on stage.

Aside from his work with Trent Reznor Rob Sheridan has directed music videos for several other artists and created his own comic book series, High Level.

Pino Palladino first became known as a bass player when he worked with Gary Numan on "I, Assassin" in 1982. He then established himself as a professional studio musician, working with artists like David Knopfler, John Mayer, Elton John and Jeff Beck.

After the Death of John Entwistle in 2002 Pino Palladino replaced him in The Who and stayed in the band until 2016.

Pino Palladino played bass on "Hesitation Marks" and was a live band member of Nine Inch Nails in 2013.

Josh Freese is a former Nine Inch Nails drummer. He first made contact with Nine Inch Nails when he was a member of NIN's opening band A Perfect Circle on the Fragility v2.0 Tour in 2000. He joined Nine Inch Nails as a drummer in 2005 and stayed in the band until 2008. He has recorded two solo albums and played in a wide range of bands, both as a permanent member and as a studio drummer.

Danny Lohner was a member of Nine Inch Nails between 1994 and 2001. He played bass, guitar, keyboard and provided backing vocals.

He is a remix artist with the pseudonym "Renholdër" and has worked on the original music for the movies "Underworld", "Saw" and "Saw II". He has also appeared as a musician with several other bands, including Marilyn Manson, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

Charlie Clouser was a member of Nine Inch Nails from 1994 till 2000. He was responsible for keyboarding, programming and backing vocals and also helped Trent Reznor in the studio.

Charlie Clouser is also a remix artist and has composed the scores for several movies, including End of Days, Saw I, II, III, IV, Resident Evil: Extinction and TV Series, including Las Vegas and NUMB3RS. He also played in the film Mooq in 2004.

Marilyn Manson is a shock-rock band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Originally called "Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids" they were signed to Nothing Records in 1993, thanks to Trent Reznor. Their band leader of the same name was a close friend to Reznor in the 1990s.

Trent Reznor is the producer of Marilyn Manson's first album "Portrait of an American Family". He is also credited as a producer for "Smells Like Children" and "Antichrist Superstar" as well as playing several instruments on these albums. The band also toured as a support band for Nine Inch Nails in the 90s and several members of Nine Inch Nails have also been in this band. During some live performances in 1994 Trent Reznor has been wearing a Marilyn Manson T-Shirt as a tribute to this band and and provided the remix "Mother Inferior Got Her Gunn" for the Manson-song "Get Your Gunn".

The friendship between Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor ended in the process of creating "Mechanical Animals". In 2000 Marilyn Manson directed and appeared in the music video of the NIN-song "Starfuckers, Inc." in 2000 and also performed "Starfuckers, Inc." and his song "The Beautiful People" live on stage with Nine Inch Nails on their Fragility v2.0 Tour 2000. However, the relationship between the two has not been been more distanced ever since.

In May 2004 Trent Reznor said that the early Marilyn Manson was one of the bands that impressed him the most as a live band. When asked if he was working on covering songs from other artists he replied sarcastically that he was "really hoping to do something unique and pertinent - like do an exact copy of "Personal Jesus" - but it was already taken - shit." - this was a dig at Marilyn Manson who had recently covered the Depeche Mode song.

David Bowie is an influential music artist who has been active since the 1960s and has changed his genres and styles often considerably during that time. He is one of Trent Reznor's major influences and was also a friend to him.

The 1995 Dissonance Tour was co-headlined by Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. Towards the NIN-set David Bowie's band came on stage gradually and they performed five songs together with NIN, the last one being "Hurt" which was sung by Bowie and Reznor. Then Nine Inch Nails disappeared and David Bowie' show began. A video of Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie chatting backstage can be seen on "Closure".

The line "falls wanking to the floor" from David Bowie's 1973 song "Time" is included in several remixes of the Nine Inch Nails song "Mr. Self Destruct" on the remix album "Further Down the Spiral" from 1995.

Trent Reznor remixed David Bowie's "The Hearts Filthy Lesson" in 1995. He also remixed the song "I'm Afraid of Americans" for the single release in 1997 and appeared in the music video for it. Nine Inch Nails performed a version of that song during their NIN|JA Tour and the Wave Goodbye Tour in 2009. When Bowie died in 2017 Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross created a „Farewell Mix“ of „I Can‘t Give Everything Away“ from his latest album „Blackstar“. Nine Inch Nails also performed this song live several times. A cover of David Bowie‘s „Life on Mars?“ is included in the score of „Watchmen: Volume 3“ by TR and Atticus Ross.

In May 2004 Trent Reznor said, that David Bowie was one of the artists that impressed him the most as a live act and that he has been listening to David Bowie during the creation of the new album. He also said that is favorite Bowie albums were "Hunky Dory", "Scary Monsters" and "Low".

In an interview with the Rolling Stone in March 2011 Trent Reznor said: "NIN is comfortable to me, familiar. [...] But I look at David Bowie's fearlessness in changing and reinventing himself. That takes courage."

Jane's Addiction is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1986. Its core members are Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery. Over the years the band has split up and reunited numerous times with various lineups.

Trent Reznor and Jane's Addiction made contact during the very first Lollapalooza festival in 1991 when Nine Inch Nails performed on the same stage as Jane's Addiction. Trent Reznor also sampled the song "Had a Dad" from Jane's Addiction' 1988 album "Nothing's Shocking" for the NIN-song "Ringfinger" on "Pretty Hate Machine".

In May 2004 Trent Reznor said that Jane's Addiction was one of the bands that impressed him the most as a live band.

When Jane's Addiction reunited in their core lineup in 2009 Trent Reznor produced several of their songs in his home studio. In the following months Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails toured together in the USA on the NIN|JA Tour 2009. During that Tour Eric Avery joined Nine Inch Nails on stage to perform "Head Like a Hole". Dan Cleary (Dave Navarro's guitar technician) joined NIN on stage to perform "Wish".

During the last leg of the Wave Goodbye Tour 2009 in the USA Eric Avery joined Nine Inch Nails and Gary Numan live on stage to perform the Gary Numan song "Cars" and the Gang of Four song "Love Like Anthrax". Dave Navarro joined Nine Inch Nails live on stage during their next show to perform "The Warning", "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)", and "Gave Up".

Saul Williams is a hip hop artist, poet and and actor. He became famous for his role in the 1998 movie "Slam".

Trent Reznor played the song "List of Demands" in 2005, when he was guest-hosting the "Radio One Rock Show" and said about it: "Next up is Saul Williams. I became aware of him a few months ago on his last self-titled album "Saul Williams", I think he's one of the most inspiring voices in American hip hop right now, in his records, and I think he breathes life into a pretty dead genre right now, in my opinion." He also played "African Student Movement" on that show.

Saul Williams supported Nine Inch Nails on tour in 2005 and also appeared on stage with Nine Inch Nails to perform his songs "African Student Movement" and "List Of Demands". His songs "Grippo", "List of Demands (Reparations) and "African Student Movement" were played before NIN-shows in that era. When asked why a hip hop artist was performing on the same stage as Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor said "I asked Saul to do the shows and I'm honored to share the stage with him. I was watching him the other night and got goosebumps - he is that fucking cool! Seriously, he's been one of the few current artists out that I feel are truly inspiring. Hopefully my audience is open-minded enough to appreciate something different."

In 2006 he created his next album "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust" together with Trent Reznor. Reznor produced the album, provided guest vocals for the song "WTF" and convinced Williams to release the album as a free download with the voluntary choice to pay five dollar for it.

In 2007 Saul Williams created two remixes of Nine Inch Nails songs: "Gunshots by Computer" and "Survivalism_Tardusted". Both songs were included on the album "Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D". Saul Williams also appeared live on stage with Nine Inch Nails on their 2009 Wave Goodbye tour to perform his song "Banged and Blown Through" and the NIN-song "Survivalism" with them.

Peter Murphy is the singer of the now-disbanded goth-rock band Bauhaus and a successful solo-artist.

Trent Reznor and Peter Murphy share a history dating back to 1990, when Nine Inch Nails served as the opening band for Peter Murphy's Deep Tour in 1990. In return, Bauhaus has been the opening band for Nine Inch Nails on their Live: With Teeth Summer Amphitheater Tour 2006.

During that time in 2006 Nine Inch Nails and Peter Murphy played a series of special radio shows. The songs performed together include Nine Inch Nails' "Reptile", "Head Like a Hole" and "Hurt", Peter Murphy's "A Strange Kind of Love", Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing", The Normal's "Cold Leatherette", the Bauhaus song "Sanity Assassin" and the Joy Division songs "Dead Souls", "Twenty Four Hours", "Warsaw" and "Atmosphere". Together with TV On the Radio they played the Bauhaus song "Bela Lugosi's Dead", Pere Ubu's "Final Solution" and TV On the Radio's "Dreams".

Peter Murphy appeared on stage with Trent Reznor several times. In the last leg of the "Wave Goodbye" Tour 2009 in the USA he joined Nine Inch Nails to perform the NIN-song "Reptile", the Peter Murphy song "A Strange Kind of Love", the Bauhaus-song "Kick in the Eye", the Joy Division songs "Dead Souls" and "Atmosphere" and the Pere Ubu song "Final Solution".

Adrian Belew is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is the front man of the progressive rock group King Crimson and has also produced several solo albums. His guitar playing style is very experimental.

Adrian Belew has contributed to the three Nine Inch Nails albums "The Downward Spiral", "The Fragile" and "Ghosts I–IV". In the Guitar Player Magazine Trent has stated that "Adrian is the most awesome musician in the world", although Belew makes jokes about it, that he must have meant "awful".

Adrian Belew has also made music together with one of Trent Reznor's biggest idols, David Bowie.

Dave Grohl became known as the drummer of Nirvana. He joined the band before the recording of their album "Nevermind.

After Kurt Cobain's death Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters where he plays guitar and sings. He was engaged in several other projects, for example playing drums on Queens of the Stone Age's record Songs for the Deaf.

Dave Grohl has appeared on the Nine Inch Nails record "With Teeth", where he played drums on "The Hand that Feeds", as well as several other songs.

Dr. Dre is an American rapper and influential hip hop producer. He has been part of the group N.W.A. and produced artists like Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent.

When Nine Inch Nails recorded "The Fragile", Dr. Dre worked as the mixing assisstant on the song "Even Deeper".

Gary Numan is an English musician. He was was part of Tubeway Army and is a pioneer in electronic music. He composes his own songs and sings on them, his style is considered as synthpop.

Gary Numan has been an influence to Trent Reznor, as a homage to him Nine Inch Nails included a cover of Numan's song "Metal" on their remix album "Things Falling Apart" and before NIN concerts in 2005 Gary Numan's "This Wreckage" was played at the venues.

During the Wave Goodbye Tour 2009 Gary Numan joined Nine Inch Nails live on stage to perform his songs "Metal", "Cars", "I Die: You Die" and "Down In the Park" and the Gang of Four song "Love Like Anthrax".

Trent Reznor likes "The Aircrash Bureau" from the Gary Numan album "Telekon" on ping.

Clint Mansell is the lead singer of the British band Pop Will Eat Itself that was signed to Trent Reznor's record label Nothing Records.

During the Nights of Nothing Tour 1996 Mansell joined Nine Inch Nails on stage to performed the Pop Will Eat Itself songs "R.S.V.P." and "Wise Up! Sucker" with them.

As a score composer Mansell has music from Nine Inch Nails for the movie "Man On Fire" and has cited Trent Reznor as a musical consultant for the movie "Requiem for a Dream".

In 2005 TV on the Radio's "Dreams" was played before Nine Inch Nails concerts. That same year Trent Reznor played the song, when he was guest-hosting the "Radio One Rock Show" and said about it: "That was TV on the Radio with a cool track called "Dreams". TV on the Radio is one of those bands that just happen to appear, a bit ago, that is breathing some new hope into some new bands coming out. It's pretty inspiring to hear their record, you should check it out."

During the second last show of the Wave Goodbye Tour 2009 Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan joined Nine Inch Nails on stage to perform "Mr. Self Destruct" and "Wish." During the last show Greg came on stage to perform "Mr. Self Destruct" with NIN and the whole band joined in to perform "Wish".

In 2005 Nine Inch Nails had to cancel some of their shows because of medical problems of their drummer. During this time a picture of the band and Meg White, which had been taken backstage at a show around that time, was posted on nin.com. The photo led to speculation about her joining the band as a drummer, but she never did.

In 2007 Nine Inch Nails were the opening band at two Foo Fighters shows in the UK.

Nine Inch Nails served as the opening band on The Jesus and Mary Chain's Automatic Tour in 1990.

In 2005 The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Darklands" and "The Living End" were played before Nine Inch Nails concerts. That same year Trent Reznor played the song "Darklands" when he was guest-hosting the "Radio One Rock Show" and said about it: "Coming up next, got a track by one of my favorite bands, the Jesus and Mary Chain. Our first tour we ever did as Nine Inch Nails, we opened for Jesus and Mary Chain, and that was on their "Automatic" record. And I remember seeing them on the US PsychoCandy tour, and that was the one that was guaranteed to last nine minutes but might go as long as fifteen. They came to this place called the Fantasy nightclub in Cleveland, where a very early incarnation of Nine Inch Nails were rehearsing. It may not have been Nine Inch Nails, but it was some band I was in that was rehearsing in the Fantasy nightclub and they were playing in the theatre downstairs. There was this big dilemma because the drummer lost one of his sticks, and he only had two, and they weren't going on unless they could find another one. So, luckily, my band had one, the show went on... Nine glorious minutes, the show was over. But, it always struck me that first record - "Psychocandy" is still a big influence - is one of the most interesting sounding and design records. Behind an impenetrable wall of noise is some actually really good, catchy songs. And to see them evolve into what they turned into, it was a cool thing. And when we toured with them, I don't think they even grunted a word at us, but it was still cool to be around them. This track, "Darklands", is off their second record. Before the record that we toured with, but when I hear now, something really takes me back to that kinda time. And that really well written song, wrapped up in melancholy, it's just a great track. This is Jesus and Mary Chain."

In September 2010 Trent liked the album "Psychocandy" on ping. Nine Inch Nails like their song "Nine Million Rainy Days" from the album "Darklands".

In 1989, Nine Inch Nails opened for Skinny Puppy on their VIVIsectVI Tour.

At the Sziget Festival 2007 in Hungary Trent Reznor said he had arrived to the festival some days before the gig, and that he went to see the performance of Skinny Puppy, and then met the guys backstage.

In 1991, Nine Inch Nails opened for The Wonder Stuff on a concert in Paris.

Trent Reznor provided backing vocals for the song "Past the Mission" on the 1994 album "Under the Pink".

Nine Inch Nails member Justin Medal-Johnson's band Pet was signed to Tori Amos's record label in 1996 and recorded one album at her home in Ireland. Later Medal-Johnson went on to play bass on her albums "From The Choirgirl Hotel", "Strange Little Girls", and "Scarlet's Walk".

Also, former Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese is a member of A Perfect Circle, former Nine Inch Nails bassist Jeordie White was in A Perfect Circle between 2002 and 2004 and former Nine Inch Nails bassist, guitarist and keyboarder Danny Lohner between 1999 and 2004.

The song "Potions" on the 2009 album "'C' Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE)" was co-written by Trent Reznor and originally intended for Tapeworm.

Also, former Nine Inch Nails member Danny Lohner is a studio member of Puscifer.
