Really loved this guys music, and then I spoke to a single French person about him, and was immediately hit with "Oh that dude's a pedofile who worked with French nazi collaborator to make an album that explains sex to children" and that kinda ruined him for me. Just a heads up. To me, it colors his music in a different hue, but he's dead either way.

This sounds a lot more damning than it actually is. The album in question is called L'Amour Et La Vie (Love and life), subtitled La conception et la naissance expliquées aux enfants (Conception and birth explained to children). It is not explicit at all and was pretty well received -- it's nothing more than vintage sexual education with lots of metaphors, talk of the 'mystery' of life, blah blah. It was produced by Nazi collaborator Paul Touvier, sentenced to death for 'crimes against humanity', but he was using a fake identity (he used his wife's birthname Berthet). At the time of production, no one including Brel knew about his Nazi past. It's certainly not a great look for Brel but I don't think it's enough evidence to call him a pedophile or a Nazi sympathiser.

I appreciate the clarification! Like I said I got most of my information from someone who is from France. As a non-French speaker it can be hard to find a lot of these details, so thank you for putting them here.

The way this man puts his heart, body and soul into every single bit of his performances along with his impeccable songwritting is beyond me. Up close and personal, a representation of human condition in the most diverse spectrums with the sensibility of poetry, but also with the beauty imagery of cinema and the beauty that only music can bring with the richest of images that our mind can project. Songs full of life and emotion, which is impossible to not feel something while listening; it's from the heart. The instrumentation on his records are also precise and rich in conveying his lyricism, specially on Ces-gens-là; one of the greatest ever.
