A right delayed is a right denied.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Human Rights - While most of us are aware that we possess human rights, not many of us know what it means in a practical sense. In simple terms, it is the basic rights and freedoms that each individual is entitled to just by virtue of being human. Human rights are needed to preserve and protect every individual’s basic sense of being.

In this blog, we focus on why human rights matter and how they protect every individual. We also aim to provide a better understanding of how human rights can serve you.

How Do We Define Human Rights?

Human rights are commonly defined as fundamental rights and freedoms that every person is inherently entitled to, irrespective of their nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, or any other status. These rights are considered universal, inalienable, and indivisible, forming the foundation for human dignity, equality, and a just society where everyone is treated equally. The definition of human rights is often based on key principles and values that are widely recognized in international law and agreements.

Human Rights are:

  • Indivisible and Interdependent - This implies that all of our human rights have equal standing and no particular right is more important than the other.
  • Universal - This means that all the human beings in the entire world have equal rights.
  • Inalienable - This implies that human rights are totally unconditional. They don’t have to be bought, earned or inherited, and they cannot be taken away by any person, or any institution, for any reason. If it is upheld then it is debatable, but every state must protect the human rights of all their citizens.
  • Non-discrimination - All individuals are entitled to human rights without discrimination based on race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
  • Equality - Human rights promote equality and prohibit discrimination. Everyone is entitled to the same rights and freedom, without distinction.
  • Dignity - Human rights recognize and uphold the inherent dignity of all individuals. Each individual has the right to be treated with respect and without degradation.

History of Human Rights - When And Why Were They Created?

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly, one of the most comprehensive blueprints to ensure the civil liberties of all global citizens regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religious affiliation. Every December 10th, International Human Rights Day is observed around the world in commemoration of the UDHR.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

In 1948, shortly after the United Nations' (UN’s) creation, the member states came together to create the list of human rights.

On the 10th of December 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was formally created. This isn’t to say that the idea of human rights only just emerged. For hundreds of years, people have been seeking security, dignity and freedom.

However, this document was revolutionary as it was the first time that UN member states acknowledged that all human beings were born the same and deserved the same rights, regardless of circumstances.

Theme For Human Rights Day 2023

This (2023) year’s theme is “Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture in the Future”. It is a crucial reminder of the role that teachers and education play in not just promoting but upholding human rights as well. Consolidating and sustaining a human rights culture into the future requires different approaches that involve education, advocacy, and policy development at all levels of society. The ultimate goal should be to create a culture in which respect for human rights is ingrained and celebrated, and violations of these rights are not tolerated.
