Cryptid #1

The Cryptid Catcher

Rate this book
The Cryptid Catcher is the first book in a monstrously fun middle-grade duology by Lija Fisher about a boy who inherits a job hunting legendary creatures.

After Clivo Wren's archaeologist father dies mysteriously, the newly orphaned thirteen-year-old finds out the truth: his dad was no archaeologist. He was actually a cryptid catcher, known for finding elusive beasts like the bloodsucking chupacabra. His goal: discover the one extraordinary cryptid whose blood grants immortality—before the knowledge falls into the wrong hands. The mission remains unfinished, and now there's only one person who can take the renowned cryptid catcher's place: Clivo. He may not know the first thing about monster hunting, but he's willing to give it a try—because anything beats staying home with his salsa-crazy aunt and her neurotic cats.

Praise for The Cryptid Catcher:

"[Fisher] dishes up an action-oriented romp, puts a resourceful but not superhuman protagonist at the head of a colorful, diverse (of species as well as race) supporting cast, and salts the plot with tantalizing hints that the stakes are about to broaden.” —Booklist, starred review

"Fisher's debut, the first half of a duology, delivers adventure and laughs. . .readers will be ready for the sequel when they turn the final page." —Kirkus Reviews

This is such a fun book. It reminded me a bit of Eion Colfer's Artemis Fowl series as the MC jets off around the world for adventures...

But I don't want to give spoilers, so let me just say that in THE CRYPTID CATCHER, Lija Fisher tells the story of young Clivo who, after his father dies, discovers an amazing secret that will change his life and send him on a mission to save the world. There's humor, fun gadgets, fighting against the bad guys, and really smart kids.

I read an ARC of this book with no expectation of a review, and I look forward to reading the second in the series.

Do you believe in mythical creatures like the Loch Ness Monster? Bigfoot? The Abominable? The Yeti? Well what about The Chupacabra? Well, Clivo had never even thought about these creatures, that is until one night a strange man knocks on his door to tell him that his dad had been a Cryptid Catcher, one who seeks out these mythological creatures. How could this be? Clivo's dad always told him that he was an archeologist, but his dad is gone now and Clivo can not ask him. But now this strange man, Mr. Chauncery, has proof and he wants Clivo to take up where his dad left off. How can Clivo go around the world chasing these creatures when he is only thirteen-years-old? He has a diamond credit card, a wad of cash, and a group of kids whose whole life is researching the myths. His goal is to find the immortal cryptid, the one who has magical blood to make some live forever. Clivo is in a race to find this creature before the bad guys, but what happens when the bad guys find him? Read this fast-paced, action-packed, edge-of-your-seat, page turner to see if Clivo can find these mythical creatures or if he will succumb to the same fate at his father. Read to find out!!

I loved everything about this book!! Clivo is a kid who has lost both of his parents, has to live with a slightly eccentric aunt and only has one friend. He is a character that will grab your heart from page one and won't let go. He has been through a lot but he is determined to try to fill his dad's shoes. The supporting characters in the book will make you laugh out loud with their dry humor. This book is a must read!! Don't miss it!!

I read this book aloud to my daughter and she LOVED it. She's now obsessed with Nessie. And when we finished she shouted, "THERE BETTER BE A SEQUEL!" So I'd say it was a hit.

Fans of Rick Riordan will love this book!
It's STRANGER THINGS meets the hunt for Big Foot, Nessie, and other cryptids, a.k.a. animals from folklore that may actually exist! In this hilarious novel, 13-year-old Clivo's parents didn't raise him to be an A+ student, they were too busy teaching him jujitsu, marksmanship, and foreign language skills--Clivo speaks English, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, and Hindustani! They also trained him to think of clever ways to get around rules. With his Ultra Elite Diamond American Express card and his team of teen geniuses, he uses his quick wit and chases adventure to find the most sought after cryptid before it lands in the wrong hands. Basically, Clivo is saving humanity!
Like I said, fans of Rick Riordan will love this book. If you're looking for a bit of danger and magic, this is the book for you.

I don't usually read a lot of middle grade books at my current age, but I'm really interested in cryptids and while perusing the gift shop at the Sasquatch Outpost in Bailey, CO I stumbled across this book. At first, I was a little worried and jealous because I've also written a book that I am desperately trying to get published somehow with similar themes, but thankfully, after reading this book, they are actually radically different. *Fwew*

With that being said, I also picked this book (and its sequel) up because, while I like cryptids, I love stories/books with a narrative, and unfortunately most crytpid books are written in a faux-scientific research manner. Straight forward and all cold information. So, even with this boom being middle grade, it peaked my interest.

I think this book was very well written and middle school kids and younger would probably absolutely love it, but through my adult eyes, there were just a few flaws I couldn't get over to give it five stars.

The characters are distinct with unique personalities. The kids are MENSA geniuses and the adults are written as complete nincompoops as most are in MG series. The locations are fun and immersive. Some jokes landed while others didn't for me, but I'm sure young kids would get quite the kick out of most of them. I was a little confused by the messaging at the end of the book when Clivo makes sure to keep the cryptids free because the world needs magic and hope, but all of his friends basically poo-poo that by coming in with the hard materialist science point of view that hope kills science. Maybe that will be explored more in the sequel.

I had two big issues really. The first, to keep it broad and spoiler free: a lot of the cryptid 'hunting' seemed way to convenient and easy to the point that it was hard to believe no layman stumbled upon one of these things in this world without catching it. And quite a few of the plot conflicts had some serious cases of deus ex machina.

And my only other real complaint for this book is that the cover is a little misleading in that only two cryptids appear in the book (technically three if you count the brief prologue that doesn't involve the main character) and of those two (three) from what I can tell, only one of them appears on the cover of the book while the other two do not.

Overall, this was a decent and quick read and I look forward to what the second book in the duology has to offer.

I feel bad giving this a 2-star. It isn't a horrible book; it just isn't a fantastic one either. There isn't really anything in it that's harmful or offensive, either (other than a few ethnocentric remarks and dated references). For a book called The Cryptid Catcher, I expected more cryptids. I don't judge a book by its cover, but when it came in at my library and I saw it had a lot of cryptids on it, I expected cryptids. We only get to interact with three, and it's very brief since the cryptids are more of a means to an end. Honestly, they could have been traded out with any other monster and it wouldn't have made much of a difference.

I'm a huge cryptid fan, so this was by far the biggest letdown, however, there was more to be disappointed by. The writing style wasn't bad, pretty basic but not bad, it made for a nice quick read which is great for kids that are reluctant readers. But the villains were too cartoonish, even for a children's book, the grief stuff was handled oddly, and much of the dialogue didn't sound natural. This is something I would expect from a kid writing a story, and I don't mean that as an insult: there just seemed to be too much eagerness to get from one point to the other as fast as possible, write cool-looking scenes that made no sense, or weren't necessary, and some of the conflict was just too...simple? Obvious? Like I said, I could see a kid coming up with a fun story like this, that isn't a bad thing, but an author should put forth the effort expected. I don't think that it being a children's book is an excuse for weak development and structure.

And again: where were the cryptids?? So, no, this isn't a horrible book, it was just disappointing and more of a letdown. I'm still trying to decide if I want to read the sequel, just to know how the main plot thread ties up, but we'll see.

Clivo Wren lost his mother when he was very young. When his archaeologist father dies mysteriously, he goes to live with his Aunt Pearl and her two crazy cats. He lived with her whenever his father went off to an “archaeological dig.” Sadly Clivo discovers a big secret about what his father really did. He was a cryptid catcher know for his amazing record for catching cryptids. He then would take a blood sample and let the cryptid go. It suddenly dawned on Clivo why his father insisted on learning several foreign languages, jujitsu and more. Clivo learned about his father from a man named Mr. Douglas Chancery. He was the boss of his father’s work. His father had insisted that he should hire Douglas to replace him, if he died. Clivo is confused about his father—he doesn’t know if Mr. Chancery was on the up and up. He is warned by Mr. Chancery that other cryptid hunters will be after him if he takes the job as his father was a famous cryptid hunter as he did find several cryptids. Clivo asks him how does he find cryptids and was informed that it was his “problem.” The first cryptid Clivo goes after is the Loch Ness monster. Does Clivo find the monster? How?

The author has written a story that is not only funny but very action-packed adventure story. The story is easy to read and not scary. It has some surprises throughout the novel. I loved how Clivo was able to follow his father’s footsteps even though he is scare. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Lija Fisher’s middle-grade debut The Cryptid Catcher is a fast-paced, exciting adventure. Kids will love learning about the different cryptids - some familiar like the Yeti and Loch Ness Monster, and others I’d never heard of, like the Otterman. I enjoyed the unique twist on a well-loved fantasy trope, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with Clivo and the gang in the sequel! Clivo is a main character you can’t help loving - he’s like a young Indiana Jones - and the supporting cast, kids who are not normally portrayed as heroes, are given the spotlight. I found myself constantly changing my mind about whether some characters were good or bad as the story progressed. The Cryptid Catcher is a fun, rollicking mystery-adventure that 3rd-6th graders will love.

What an enjoyable, fun read! Reminds me of a combination of The Goonies but with a Monster of The Week style flair to it.
In The Cryptid Catcher, Lija Fisher writes about Clivo a young man, who discovers an amazing secret about his father that changes his life, and makes him questions everything he thought he knew about his family. He sets out on a journey to fulfill the destiny his father chose for him and make new friends along the way. It is funny, exciting, and extremely clever. It features a diverse cast of different kids that almost anyone can find one to identify with. I found myself cheering Clivo on and worrying for him during harder decisions he had to make. I cannot wait to read more about his journey.

I've long believed that I am not a Science Fiction fan, but these middle grade books keep proving me wrong. Clivo Wren is thrown into Cryptid catching after his father mysteriously dies, and a stranger shows up at the door to convince Clivo this is the destiny his father wanted for him.
This book is alternatively funny and intelligent. Clivo has an important mission: to find the immortal cryptid. This mission is not for Clivo's gain, it's a precaution taken to keep the secret to immortality out of the wrong hands.
This book is so much more than I thought it would be, and I kept thinking about all the students who would have loved it! I'll be chasing them down the sixth grade hallway come September.
Highly recommend to fifth graders and up.

Lija Fisher knows exactly how to hook kids on a story and keep them reading right through to the very end. This book opens with a bang when Clivo Wren discovers that his late father was not an anthropologist but a cryptid catcher; it's now up to Clivo to accomplish his father's mission of discovering a much-hunted immortal cryptid before its secret of eternal life falls into evil hands. Along the way Clivo is assisted by a brilliant band of wise-cracking, nerdy kids who are film and photography experts, research whizzes, satellite hackers, and more. Fisher delivers nonstop, fast-paced adventures, while also managing to give her story humor and heart, plus the beautiful message that the world is a better place for having myths and magic.

This is such an incredibly fun book -- I couldn't put it down! Not only is this book action packed, but it's full of humor as well. Clivo is a great protagonist, and all the secondary characters are wonderfully-drawn as well: from his salsa-dancing aunt, to the mysterious (and always-grumpy) Douglas Chancery, to the group of super-smart kids Clivo meets along the way. I love that the kids drive the action in this exciting middle grade. It reminds me a bit of Rick Yancy's The Monstrumologist. The stakes are high as Clivo sets out to catch cryptids and save the world. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

I didn’t have a lot of expectations about this book, but from the first page, I was fully in. I also didn’t have much of an idea about cryptozoology, and I felt like I learned so much about it from this book. I want to talk with my students more about cryptozoology and all of the various cryptids. Usually, when I read aloud to my son, I get to points where I skim, just because it’s so much. But I feel like this book is so well-edited, there isn’t much I could leave out. The action is interesting and I love the characters. Looking forward to The Cryptid Keeper! Read the intro! I dare you not to want to know more!

What a fun book! I've always loved weird paranormal subjects, so cryptids are right up my alley. I can't say that I had heard of every cryptid mentioned in this book, but I knew most of them pretty well and thought the author did a good job on her research and presenting the "facts" about these excitingly strange creatures of urban myth and lore. Definitely going to have to pick up the second book in the series to see how it ends and find out if they ever find the "immortal". I'm hoping they don't find it, that it doesn't actually exist. That kind of power is just too dangerous in anyone's hands!

We are reading this book for "One School One Book" this year at our middle school and it is really good! The story is fun and engaging, drawing us into Clivo's new world of cryptid hunting. As he discovers that his father wasn't just an archeologist but an undercover cryptid hunter, Clivo realizes that by teaching him 5 languages and jujitsu that his father had been training him to follow in his footsteps. Clivo grabs onto the new challenge and travels to Scotland to find the Loch Ness monster and Alaska to find the elusive Ottorman. Along the way he gains some hilarious new friends and the self confidence to get through life without his dad. A++

This book is a blast - Clivo is an unlikely hero and Fisher handles the archetype of the orphan hero beautifully, crafting a full world inside his mountain home and in the odd places he lands. At times Clivo felt older than his 13 years, but that may be because of his isolation and loneliness. I'd like to see his anger at his dad emerge more, which I suspect will happen in book #2! This is not a genre I'm usually drawn to, and I'm very glad I've read it.

A fun and adventurous novel perfect for middle grade readers into both humor and action! Clivo Wren has to learn how to be a cryptid catcher (someone who tracks down mythical creatures) while also figuring out who he can trust - and who he can't. Full of suspense and some laugh-out-loud funny moments, this one is sure to be a winner with the kids.

My 11 year old daughter and I like to read together, and this was a perfect adventure to read aloud. Lija's sense of humor comes out with her characters, as well a marvelous sense of play and fun. I think a lot of adults will enjoy this book as well as young adults! Read it aloud, make fun character voices!!!

I enjoy young adult fiction as well as the fantasy-adventure genre and this book is a hit on both accounts. I've not read any books centered around cryptid characters before and enjoyed the inclusion of the familiar Lochness legend. The main characters are enjoyable and believable and the writing is crisp with a good pace.

Pretty entertaining although I'm not sure if I would read the next in the series. The setup is interesting and I enjoyed the humor. The twist was pretty easy to see--I think even for a kid but didn't really detract too much from the overall story. The action is mild and the suspense pretty low. Enjoyable but nothing that stood out for me.

So I have to say that I really thought this was a fun book and am looking forward to diving into book two. BUT.... that cover is very deceiving with it's silly cartoony look. I was expecting a much more juvenile plot - let alone the vocabulary! I would love to share this book with 4th and 5th graders but they look at the cover and grin and say - "Oh, that looks cute! No thanks." This is not a silly romp through the monsters under your bed - it is a great introduction to cryptozoology which is such an intriguing topic to middle grade readers.
Clivo has just lost his father to what he thinks was an archaeology accident until he is thrown into a crazy world of travel, hunting and sneaking around to discover what my be the secret to immortality.
Such a fun book that moves quickly and has really likable characters who band with Clivo to help him hunt down the crypid creatures - I will just have to put a paper bag over the cover to get the kids to give it a try!
DON'T LET THE COVER TURN YOU AWAY!

I'm a huge fan of monsters, so this cover grabbed me right away. Clivo's adventure is filled with friends, discovery, and action. I appreciated that the tone of the book wasn't too slapstick with humor like some other middle grade books (which is fine just not my cup of tea), the funny moments felt natural to the tale. I'm curious to find out what happens in the second book!

What a wonderful adventure full of family, friends and a hilarious crabby old man! We loved the unique cryptid hunt adapted as a story for children. These have always been fun campfire stories! We were so shocked at the twist at the end! We are excited to move into book 2 and find out where Clivo’s story takes us.

I wanted to love this, but couldn't. I liked how distinct the personalities were for each of the team members. I liked the literary and pop culture references, but some of the plot was too long. Some of the suspension of belief took me out of this world. Love the idea tho.

I daresay, this book is utterly horrible. Filled with miserable stereotypes, poor dialogue, and weak attempts to amuse young-adult readers. Simply not worth reading.
