The Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State has been shut down indefinitely due to allegations of widespread immoral activities, including prostitution, adultery, and homosegxwality.
The decision was confirmed by the local government chairman, Hon. Barr. Aminu Salisu Kadawa, who stated that the closure was necessary to restore order and curb the illegal behavior reported within and around the market. “The market has degenerated into a hub for illicit activities, which is contrary to its intended purpose. To ensure peace and sanity, it must be shut down,” Kadawa explained.
The chairman warned that all occupants must vacate the market by January 1, 2025, or face severe consequences. “This place has become a haven for criminals, armed robbers, prostitutes, and other unlawful elements,” he added.
Kadawa also assured that the market would only reopen after a comprehensive review of its operations.
Islamic scholar Imam Abdullahi Yusif Chiromawa expressed deep concern over the market’s influence on local youth and family values. “This market has turned into a center for adultery, homosegxwality, and prostitution, affecting both the youth and married women,” Chiromawa said.
S.A. Gusau, a representative of the state Commissioner of Police, confirmed that the security forces would enforce the evacuation order. “The security forces will ensure that the market is cleared, and we are committed to maintaining law and order,” Gusau said.
The closure has sparked mixed reactions from the community. Some residents praise the move as a much-needed step toward moral regeneration, while others express worries over the economic impact on traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
